We stayed on Ardmaddy castle estate in Scotland this week. They have a lovely garden which is part of the Scotland Garden scheme that’s open to the public. The colours of the Acers are stunning in their red and orange. The Autumn colours are stunning in Scotland at this time of year. Do visit the gardens if you are near Oban.

I recently went to the RHS gardens. They have planted 270,000 tulip bulbs. The colours were gorgeous and looked fantastic in drifts. So nice to see such a show of colour. 🌷

At this time of year I seem to be in and out of the house between rain showers but today there were hailstorms with hugs hailstones. It’s been raining so much that the earth is a bit like clay so difficult to w**d the garden. Hopefully it will be sunnier soon. **ding

Picked the first rhubarb of 2023 today. 🥧 I feel a Rhubarb crumble coming on. Rhubarb is easy to grow and comes up every year. It likes a sunny position with moist but not waterlogged soil. You can cook and freeze it so you can have pies and crumbles in the winter.

Such a lovely evening at the RHS Gardens in Wisley at their Glow night. It was freezing cold which added to the magic of the evening. Finished off with a warm glass of Mulled Wine. It’s amazing how different coloured lights can change the atmosphere of a garden. Try and incorporate some lighting in Your garden design for that extra special feel. -beginners

Great to see young people growing vegetables. Even if you don’t have a lot of space to grow vegetables with your children you can always grow them in pots. Such a fun family time together.

You know Autumn is on its way when you start picking blackberries. I will freeze them and make Apple and Blackberry pies and crumbles. Yummy.

If you have the space for a hedge or just a few plants, Lavender is so worth growing. It flowers all summer long, and has an amazing smell. With global warming and hot summers in the UK, growing plants that look good all summer long and need little water is essential to keep colour in the garden in July and August.

I was looking at the lawn today, while sitting with a cup of tea🫖. I would love a perfectly green, w**dless lawn with stripes, but when I look at all the busy bees 🐝 collecting nectar, I think I will keep it as it is, a lawn with clover in it, for all the insect pollinators that thrive on it. Don’t ever feel that you need a perfect lawn, you could be helping the pollinators in your garden, especially the bees 🐝
