The winter garden doesn’t have to be drab. Some of my favourite plants look amazing on a chilly February day. Be it the vibrant stems of the Cornus, Helebores for their beautiful blooms, Hylotelephiums with their architectural seed heads, or the jewels that are Cyclamen.

Last week I returned to the Girdlers hall for the prize ceremony for a garden design competition I entered way back in 2020! World events delayed things somewhat… At that time I was only able to visit the garden in winter so it was fabulous to see the existing garden in its full spring glory.
The current garden is quite traditional but just beyond its tall brick walls loom the high rises of the City of London making it a surreal setting.
I’m not sure if they are going to actually build any of our designs, but it was a fun experience none the less!

Mini retaining dead hedge using more branches from my fallen cedar tree!
Constructed with just a few stakes hammered into the ground and bigger branches laid between those and the bed behind. This was a mounded bed which I cut away to make a level surface for my veg beds so needed something to act as a retaining wall to hold it in.
It will make some good homes for the little critters - like a fancy log pile. As it breaks down over the years more branches can just be laid on top.
