A huge thank you to !

I’m honestly overwhelmed and deeply humbled today.

Our Fruit Trees in Schools campaign has been featured in the RHS “People Making a Difference” series — something I never imagined when this journey began.

This project has always come from a place of hope: hope that we can protect rare and heritage fruit varieties before they disappear; hope that we can give something back to the planet by planting trees that quietly sequester carbon every day; and hope that by reaching children while they’re young, we can spark a lifelong connection with nature.

We also dream of a future where these trees help fight food poverty — where every school has fresh fruit growing just outside its classrooms.

But we’ve never believed we could do this alone. Every school, volunteer, supporter, and believer in our mission has helped carry it forward. You are the reason this is possible, and the reason this recognition means so much.

Through our Grow Fruit Trees scheme, we’re growing and donating fruit trees, helping students grow delicious varieties (for Rolvenden Primary School -Kentish varieties) — giving them the chance to enjoy their own fruit while learning where their food comes from, and exploring seasonality and sustainability in an easy, fun, and hands-on way.

🍎 Our Story — How Grow Fruit Trees Began 🍐

Nearly 20 years ago, we saw something happening that we couldn’t ignore — the incredible, historic fruit tree varieties at Brogdale were at risk of being lost forever.

So we rolled up our sleeves and started a nursery with one clear mission:

to protect these rare and heritage varieties through propagation and make them available to everyone — so you could grow a tree of your favourite apple, pear or cherry right at home.

That’s how Grow Fruit Trees was born.

For 18 years, we were based at Brogdale, surrounded by the trees of the National Fruit Collection that inspired us. We may have relocated and centralised at our nursery near Mersham — but our mission hasn’t changed a bit.

We’re still dedicated to safeguarding these incredible varieties and helping gardeners and orchardists across the UK plant trees that matter.

We may not have a coffee shop or gift section (though we’re always happy to make you a cuppa!) — what we do have is an incredible collection of fruit trees, deep knowledge, and a real passion for keeping these varieties thriving for generations to come.

Wow, what a throwback! Eight years ago I teamed up with the Daily Mirror to launch a campaign to stop the sale of energy drinks to kids… and FINALLY it looks like the government is going to do just that! They also want it to go further, by protecting everyone under the age of 18.
Energy drinks are flashy and clever, designed to pull kids in, but really they are harmful and children shouldn’t be drinking them. It’s taken way too long, but let’s make sure it’s done right and the best it can be! For OUR kids! Wes Streeting make this happen properly! JO xX

🍏 Endangered Apples: Giving the Underdogs a Second Chance
Not all heritage apples are created equal. While classics like Bramley and Cox’s Orange Pippin thrive, many other unique varieties are quietly vanishing—not because they taste bad, but because they didn’t fit the demands of modern farming.

At Grow Fruit Trees, we’re on a mission to save these overlooked gems. Each year, we select rare and endangered varieties from the National Fruit Collection to graft and grow, helping them find a home in gardens, orchards, and schools.

These apples may bruise more easily, fruit every other year, or just be a bit quirky, which is why they are not suited to commercial practices —but that’s part of their charm. And who knows? You might just discover a new favourite—and help preserve a slice of orchard history.
