Whilst September isn't the busiest month of the year for your garden, there are still plenty of jobs that need doing when it comes to your roses. Take a look at what our rosarians are doing with their roses this month.

🌹 Keep on top of deadheading to allow the plant to put its energy into new growth.

🌹 Do some light shaping to keep the rose at a manageable shape and size.

🌹 Train any new growth on your climbing and rambling roses around your trellis, over your archways, or across your wall.

🌹 Make sure your roses are still getting plenty of water, especially after the droughts we have experienced this summer.

Our Beth

A beautiful shrub rose with blush-pink, rosette-shaped blooms and a rich old-rose fragrance. Growing to around 1.2m in height, Our Beth is a lovely choice for borders, group planting or growing in a container, with repeat flowering throughout the season.

Togmeister

A compact floribunda with bright yellow, fully double blooms and a lovely fragrance. Growing to approximately 0.75m tall and wide, its neat habit makes it particularly well suited to the front of borders, planting in groups or growing in pots, where it will provide colour throughout the summer.

Festive Jewel

A beautiful rose with rich, jewel-like colouring and an elegant presence in the garden. Its repeat-flowering nature makes it a wonderful choice for adding lasting colour to borders or growing in a container, where its distinctive blooms can be enjoyed throughout the season.

MacMillan Nurse

A charming shrub rose with clusters of large, old-fashioned rosette blooms in white and cream, often touched with peach. Lightly scented and repeat flowering through summer and autumn, it grows to around 0.9m and is well suited to borders, containers and areas with some shade.

This is modern English rose ‘St Ethelburga’ from Peter Beales Roses

Introduced to the UK market in 2003 , it’s a large stocky upright shrub reaching around 4’x4’ and holding its old English style blooms skyward on Strong sturdy and very cuttable stems

The foliage is dark flat matte green and highly textured almost crinkly to the touch, the barbs or thorns are bright red and very attractive and slowly make way for a lovely amount of mossing up the flower stems, which really set off it pale mid pink flowers beautifully

The flower buds are plump round Scarlet pink tinged with orange and apricot and open to beautiful mid pink apple Blossom flowers that are around 3 inches in diameter contained by a loose outer cup blooms are highly texture and crinkly to the edges which gives them a lovely romance, produced in medium size sprays of up to 7 flowers per stem.

Flowering freely from June all the way to the late October it’s a really hard-working, robust and reliable rose taking both heat and inclement weather well.

The fragrance is what sets this rose apart from others it’s warm spicy but with notes of old English rose Sandalwood and Cloves

This is climbing rose ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’ introduced in 1868 this roses genetics run through an awful lot of the modern varieties we’re so used to seeing available to us now

Reaching around 12 to 15 feet, it will flower almost continuously from June through to the end of September, producing large candy deep pink flowers which measure around 3 to 3 1/2 inches in diameter they are carried individually and in small sprays and clusters

Flowers are held against very light fresh pale green foliage on completely thornless growth making it the perfect climber for planting in high traffic areas around windows doors or close to paths or seating area areas where you can enjoy it it’s beautiful Rich fruity but clean fragrance which has notes of candied peel

Mulch this plant deep deeply and ensure good airflow it doesn’t enjoy damp or humid environments although it does like the heat so I would suggest wherever possible growing this on a freestanding structure like a post or obelisk where ventilation is improved

Leave late flushes of flowers on the plant that are produced in August and September undead headed to produce a good display of vibrant hips come November December and January

Modern shrub rose ‘RNLI 200th with courage’ bred and introduced in 2024 from Peter Beales Roses back in full bloom once more

During Home trials this rose has stood up to it all performing well in wind rain blistering heat and dry. I have the pleasure and awarding this Brilliant tough and reliable little rose and 8 out of 10 for disease resistance.

Suitable for growing at the front of a border in a large container where it’s going to reach 3’ x 3’ producing a handsome domed and very well proportioned shrub which occasionally throws up long shoots which can be trained as a short climber on an obelisk or up the side of a rose arch

It has Rich emerald green foliage with a strong high gloss sheen which has deeply serrated edges. This texture is also mirrored through its semi double flowers which are packed full of texture and form

Blooms are produced singly and in sprays and open a rich deep apricot or burnt orange tinged with yellow and apricot slowly as the bloom opens the colour lightens and the petals curl ever so gracefully back backwards and in on themselves making the pedal count look a lot higher than it is

This characteristic means it stands up to wind and rain really well flowering profusely from early June through to the end of October

20% from the sale of each rose goes directly to the RNLI supporting their continued work at sea

The fragrance is light crisp clean with notes of green apple and elderflower

This is modern climbing rose ‘Papi Delbard’ (DELaby)

Introduced by Georges Delbard in 1995 and available in the UK through Peter Beales Roses

This is a short modern climber reaching around 8 to 10 feet making it perfect for growing on an upright pillar post or maybe a garden oblique

Incredibly free flowering it will flower from early June through to the end of September and often into the beginning of October

Referring a location in the garden in full sun where it should receive no less than 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day

It has a low horn count making it perfect for planting in high traffic areas maybe near a garden gate or doorway where you can enjoy it it’s Rich well-rounded fruity fragrance which has notes of cedar and cloves lifted with sweet notes of ripe citrus and guava

It has great disease resistance. It’s trouble free and easy to grow producing large shallow cup Rich apricot balloons which are tinged and marbled with hints of yellow apricot, peach and pink

The flowers measure 3 to 3 1/2 inches in diameter and in the early stages are divided into four distinct sections the only stage I don’t like of this particular rose is it in Budd form which I find quite ugly but flowers open quickly and are produced in large numbers,

The foliage is mid Green with a light Sheen it’s fast to establish yourself and grows away quickly making it easy to train and tie in

This is hybrid tea rose ‘Belles rives’ (Stiletto Rose,Meizolnil) bred by Meilland available in the UK through Peter Beales Roses

Producing big blousy rich dark magenta pink flowers in two distinct flushes one in June and early July,before taking a small break and beginning flowering again in August through September

A small compact well mannered and proportioned shrub reaching just 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall and around 2 1/2 to 3 feet wide preferring a location in the garden in full sun but suitable for growing at the front of a border or in a large patio container where you can enjoy it’s Rich fragrance

The foliage is incredibly dark green with a smoky grey hue. The Thorn count is incredibly low almost a Mossing which is easily removed if he wants to cut the blooms and bring them into the house the flowers cut well although they do tend to nod at the neck ever so slightly but are produced on strong stems reaching around 10 to 12 each flower measuring between 3 1/2 and 4 inches in diameter

The fragrance is Rich fruity and warm with notes of ripe blackberries and Parma Violet with a citrus base
