Final pre season friendly today ended in a 2-2 draw with Wellington Rec
The lads started the match with some good spells of football being played and the first goal of the day coming from a good press from the lads and putting the Wellington Rec back line under pressure which forced an opportunity for midfielder Curtis Mcveigh to score his first goal for the club when he picked up the loose ball in midfield and finishing well past the keeper to make it 1-0
It didn’t take long for Wellington Rec to equalise as they found some space out wide and with the Hightown back line stretched found abit of space in the box to finish from the resulting cross.
The lads went into the half time break with the scores tied.
Knowing they had another gear to go up the lads found themselves making the score 2-1 5 minutes into the second half with Josh McFadden getting an opportunity to run at the Wellington defence and expertly finishing past the helpless Wellington rec keeper.
Some fantastic saves to roll back the years from goalkeeper Marty Doherty and some last ditch wonder tackles in front of the net from Ryan Campbell was needed in the second half to keep the score line at 2-1.
There was some good football played from both sides in the last 30 minutes of the match with the hightown back line having to keep their focus with some periods of pressure from wellington Rec who were determined to get an equaliser but with 15 mins to go goalkeeper Marty Doherty faced a penalty due to a late challenge in the box from Right-back Josh Moore on a Wellington Player inside the box which unfortunately couldn’t be kept out.
With the game now level at 2-2 the lads showed great character in pushing for the winner but just couldn’t get the ball into the Wellington rec net with a few late chances coming our way.
Great game all round to finish off our pre season games and attention now turns to our first league game in 2 weeks time 🟦🟨
