Architects call for a robust response to the fire at former Antrim Arms hotel in Ballycastle

The Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA) has called for a robust response to the fire at the former Antrim Arms Hotel in Ballycastle.

CiarΓ‘n Fox, Director of RSUA, said, β€œAnother listed building that the owner wants to demolish mysteriously goes on fire. It’s a disgrace. Something needs to change.”

β€œWhen someone buys a listed building they are gaining an asset for themselves but they are also accepting a duty to the rest of us to protect that building for future generations. If an owner finds themselves in a position that they can’t afford to maintain a listed building, they should sell it. Where a private owner fails in their duty, Government needs to act.”

β€œIt is alarming, if not surprising, to hear that this fire is being treated by Police as deliberate. It is important that there is a robust investigation and that those responsible are held to account. We encourage anyone with any information to contact the Police.”

β€œBeyond that, once the structure is made safe, there will need to be an assessment of the damage to see what can be salvaged. There is an onus on the owner to finally engage a conservation architect, adopt a conservation-led strategy and robustly explore the alternatives to demolition.”

Shocking… this needs urgent engagement and action.

✨ Exciting progress at Lislagan Cottages! (Visualisation example) 🏑

Work began in earnest back in October 2025, and we’re thrilled to see how far things have come!πŸ‘·β€β™€οΈ

Two weeks ago, the windows were just going in and the heat pumps being installed. Fast forward to this week and the reclaimed flooring is in the process of being laid and 3 brand‑new kitchens being fitted. It’s incredible to see our vision taking shape! πŸ’š

We recently made the decision to transform what was the planned community space into a third cottage making the project even more sustainable and creating additional income to support CAN’s work in the long term.
Thankfully the planners agreed😊

Huge thanks to our amazing partners and supporters including Ulster Garden Villages, Baily Thomas and LFT Charitable Trusts, Splash Projects, the International Conference Centre Group (Waterfront Hall & Ulster Hall), Bella Jo Interiors & Lifestyle, Nobel design - Inspired kitchen & Interiors, and our local community, including Dirty Cars Ballymoney, AMD Car Sales and Ultimatum - Family Friendly Fundraiser for CAN by Stay True Wrestling who helped raise an incredible Β£45,000 towards the build! πŸ™Œ

Internal works should be completed by the end of March 2026, followed by landscaping and the creation of private garden spaces for each cottage 🌿.

We’re aiming for a soft launch in May and an official opening in early autumn, once registration with Tourism Northern Ireland is complete.

This project is a huge part of CAN’s journey towards sustainability and growth, providing much-needed short breaks for children and adults with learning disabilities, their families, and carers - and when not in use, it will help generate income to sustain our work. πŸ’«

Stay tuned for more updates and a short film documenting the journey! πŸŽ₯

πŸ’™ A heartfelt thank you to all who is helping make Lislagan Cottages a reality – your belief in our mission is truly transforming lives.

Ireland’s first communal housing development:

Bulk buying toilet paper is one of the more day to day potential benefits of the first truly communal housing developments on the island of Ireland, one of the team behind the project has revealed.

The developers of the cohousing project near Portaferry, Co Down, hope to break ground on the 32 home community this summer after planning permission was granted last year.
