As Christmas is just around the corner, thought I'd put a wee post up about what to do in an emergency...
β
οΈ Stop tap- do you know where yours is ? Does it work? As the colder weather draws in it's a good idea to make sure your stop tap works in case the unthinkable happens and you have a burst pipe! If you haven't got one inside the house, make sure you know where your external one is...
β
οΈ Outside taps- if you have an outside tap, do your best to either isolate it during the cold weather or protect it from the elements by getting an insulation kit designed for them.
β
οΈ Gas Meter- Do you know where it is in an emergency ? If you smell gas, your first port of call no matter the time of day should be to the Gas Emergency Service on 0800111999. They'll tell you to switch your gas off at the meter and open all doors and windows until they can attend.
β
οΈ Boiler- A lot of people have no idea how to do simple things like set up the timer (ok, some timers you need a degree for π¬ ) and also topping up the pressure. The ideal boiler pressure (if it is a pressurised system) is between 1 and 1.4bar when the system is completely cold. It will rise slightly when the Central Heating is on but if it rises to above 3bar then you'll have a problem with your boiler so call a Gas Safe Registered engineer out to take a look.
Familiarise yourself with how the boiler works and how you adjust the temperature settings :)
I will be taking some time off over the festive period to try and relax. I'll only be available for emergency works between 22nd Dec and 3rd Jan so planned works ie Boiler services and radiator changes etc will be outside of these dates... please get in touch if you wish to book in your boiler service in the new year !
