Insulating Suspended Floors

If you live in a home that was built in the early 1900’s you will most likely have a suspended timber floor.

Timber floors unfortunately allow a lot of air draughts into the property and many of the recent timber insulated floors have not been installed correctly.

Insulating and providing air tightness to floors keeps the rooms warm in winter and cool in summer.

Potential challenges with poorly insulated floors:
- Air draughts still occur
- Insulation proving ineffective
- No air flow under floor causing wood rot
- Use of insulation incorrectly adding moisture to the timbers

Best practice for insulating timber floors:
- Seek professional advice as every floor can be a little different
- Use breathable insulation
- Use a breathable membrane underneath
- Use an air tight membrane above
- Seal the air tight membrane to the wall
- Maintain ventilation underneath the floor
