Planning ahead for Summer - Grey Water
💧 Don't pour it away! Your garden could use that bath water 💧
With summer droughts becoming more common, it's time we talked about grey water – that's the water from your shower, bath, or washing machine rinse cycle.
Here's what you need to know:
✅ DO use it on: Lawns, borders, shrubs, and ornamental plants
❌ DON'T use it on: Vegetables, salad crops, or anything you'll eat
Top tips:
🕐 Use within 24 hours to keep it fresh
🚿 Apply with a watering can (not sprinklers – they clog!)
⏱️ After 6 weeks, give plants a rinse with clean water
🧂 Avoid dishwasher water – too salty for your soil
Your soil is brilliant at filtering out soap and detergents, and the residues can even act as a mild fertiliser. Just keep it short-term and your ornamental plants will thank you!

Tired of moss, patchy grass, and endless scarifying?
Your lawn problems might not be what you think. High-nitrogen fertilizers could be slowly destroying your soil health—and creating the perfect breeding ground for ant infestations.
Modern lawn care takes a completely different approach. Instead of fighting nature, work WITH it using bio-limes, beneficial bacteria, and natural soil biology.

A Natural Approach to Healthier Lawns For decades, the traditional British lawn has been maintained with high-nitrogen fertilizers and a heavy reliance on mechanical and chemical treatments. While this approach produces rapid green growth,...

Pruning for Gardens top Performance

It’s still peak pruning season! Now is the time to finish cutting back dormant trees and shrubs before spring growth begins. This is the ideal window to prune Wisteria, removing side shoots back to 2 or 3 buds. You should also be pruning summer-flowering shrubs like Buddleja, and cutting back roses to an outward-facing bud. Finish cleaning, sharpening, and servicing your garden tools so they are ready for the busy spring season ahead.

Ready to learn the best time and way to prune your plants? Our One-Day Gardening Course covers core techniques and helps you plan your gardening year. You receive 12 months of personalized support, including follow-up visits, through our MyGardenTeam service.

Start Your Summer Blooms and Indoor Sowing

February is the perfect time to start planning your summer blooms! Get reliable cut flowers later in the season by potting up dahlia tubers now in John Innes No.1 compost, keeping them in a warm, bright place to encourage early shoots. You can also start sweet peas from seed this month. If you are growing vegetables, sow heat-loving crops like chillies, peppers, and aubergines indoors using a heated propagator (18–25°C) to ensure a long growing season.
