Climbing and rambling roses covering a fence, wall, arch or growing through a tree can make an amazing show during the summer months. We have sourced some bare root roses from a local supplier and are offering them for £7.50 each or £15 for 3 plus £3.60 P&P.

Rosa Aloha - A short climbing rose with fragrant, double, rose-pink flowers and dark foliage. It looks great trained against an east or west facing wall or fence and will grow to a height of 3.5m. A repeat flowering rose which will bloom from summer to autumn.

Rosa Compassion - A repeat-flowering climbing rose with double apricot-tinted, salmon-pink flowers from July to September. This rose is known for its superior scent and looks great against a south, east or west facing wall or fence. It will grow to a height of 3m.

Rosa Mme. Alfred Carrier - An informal climbing rose with creamy/ white blooms tinged with pink, its double flowers are highly fragrant. This rose flowers from June until well into autumn and has green bushy growth. It will grow up to 7.5m

Rosa City of York - This amazing rambling rose has creamy white, semi double flowers with yellow centres. It will grow to a height of 4.5m and will happily grow against a fence, wall or over an arch. This is a particularly useful rose for a shady spot or north facing wall and the golden stamens are loved by wildlife.

Rosa Clarence House - This fragrant modern climber carries creamy white double blooms which repeat flowers over the summer and into the autumn. This rose was given to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Rosa Phyliss Bide - This rose carries sprays of small, pale apricot-pink flowers with a sweet fragrance. It is a true rambling rose which reliably repeat flowers through the year. It grows to a height of 4.5m and will adapt to most growing conditions.

Rosa Ghislaine De Feligonde - The orange buds on this almost thornless ramling rose opens to pale apricot blooms which fade to a pinky/white. It is a particularly useful rambler as it is not too vigorous. It grows to a height of 3.5m

Rosa Golden Showers - A large climbing rose with dark stems and glossy foliage. Flowers are golden yellow which appear continuously through summer and autumn and pale with age. This climber grows to a height of 4m

Rosa Alchymist - This rose carries golden-yellow flushed with orange flowers with a strong fragrance. Growing to a height of 5.5m it flowers through early summer. This rose can tolerate poorer soils and can be grown against a north facing wall or fence.

Yellow/ Orange

Achillea Terracotta: Position: Full Sun, Ht: 80cm, Flowers: June – September
I have this yarrow planted in our rich border its brown-orange flowers mature to a pale yellow and are great in the border or as a cut flower.

Agastache Firebird: Position: Sun, Ht: 75cm, Flowers: June – August
The soft orange spikes of flowers define summer in our rich border with blooms lasting all summer and loved by the bees.

Alchemilla mollis: Position Sun or shade, Ht: 45cm, Flowers: June – August
This well-known perennial’s sulphur yellow flowers are invaluable and are used throughout our garden at the front of our borders. It will gently self-seed around to give great ground cover.

Crocosmia George Davison: Position: Full Sun, Ht: 60cm, Flowers: July – September
I have this perennial with its soft yellow flowers in our mixed border, it always gives a great late summer display and works well as a cut flower.

Digitalis Suttons Apricot: Position: Partial shade, Ht: 90cm, Flowers: May-June
Who doesn’t love a foxglove, these apricot coloured flowers perform brilliantly in the shady areas of our cottage garden and the bees and insects love them.

Geum Fireball: Position: Full Sun, Partial Shade, Ht: 45-60cm, Flowers: May – September
These semi-double golden yellow flowers pack a real punch in the front of our rich border and fill the May gap where bulbs are finishing but other perennials are yet to flower.

Sisyrinchium Striatum: Position Full Sun, Ht 60cm, Flowers: Jun – July
This plant has grown on me over the last few years and I now wouldn’t be without its soft creamy-yellow flowers in early summer.

Thyme Foxley: Positon: Full Sun, Ht 5cm
I grow this thyme with its cream and green variegated foliage and pink flowers in a pot on our back doorstep it is a great creeping evergreen which fills a container quickly and it is an excellent used in the kitchen.

Verbascum Helen Johnson: Position: Full Sun, Ht: 90cm, Flowers: June – September
With its bold statement coppery orange flowers this adds real interest to any border.

Pink/Red

Geum Leonards Variety: Position: Full Sun, Partial Shade, Ht:30cm, Flowers: April - June
These rose coloured, bell shaped flowers work really well at the front of our cottage garden borders and fill the May gap where not much else is in flower.

Lavender Hidcote Pink: Position: Full Sun, Ht: 50cm
With its grey foliage and its very pale pink flowers I grow this lavender on the south facing side of our house where the soil bakes through the summer, it performs well and the bees love it.

Lupin Gallery Red: Position: Full sun, Partial Shade, Ht: 90cm, Flowers: June-July
Towers of lupin flowers in June are part of the definition of a cottage garden in early summer. Gallery Red has bright red-pink spires of flowers which really stand out as other plants are beginning to flower.

Papaver Patty’s Plum: Position: Full Sun, Ht: 75cm, Flowers: May – July
This is one of my absolute favourite plants in our garden its spectacular early summer plum blooms stand out in our cottage garden putting a smile on my face every time I walk past.

Penstemon Hidcote pink: Position Full sun/partial shade, Ht: 1m, Flowers: July – Oct
This pink flowered penstemon contrasts brilliantly with red planting schemes, I have it planted alongside our drive in full sun for great late summer colour.

Penstemon Sour Grape: Position: Full Sun/partial shade, Ht: 60cm, Flowers: July – Oct
In our purple/ pink border I have a couple of penstemon sour grapes to add late summer colour often flowering up until first frosts.

Salvia rose queen: Position: Full Sun, Ht 90cm, Flowers: June – Sept
With its soft pink flowers and dark green foliage I have this sage planted alongside our house it gives amazing summer flowers and is adored by the bees.

Purple/ Blue

Eryngium planum (sea holly): Position: Full Sun, Ht: 60cm, Flowers: July – Aug
We have Eryngium planum planted in a border alongside our drive, it bakes through the summer and delivers great architectural flowers.

Fennel (bronze): Position: Full Sun, Ht: 100cm
Whether it’s the aniseed taste or the bronze feathery foliage this is just as well placed in the herb garden or perennial border.

Nepeta Six Hills Giant: Position: Full Sun, Ht 60cm Flowers June – September
I love this catmint in our cottage garden as it sprawls through the middle of the border, It has a long flowering period and if cut back will have a second flush of flowers.

Rosemary Miss Jessops: Position: Full Sun, Ht: 1-1.5m
I have used this upright variety of rosemary for a few year, its evergreen aromatic foliage is great when used in cooking. Its light blue flowers appear in late spring and summer and are loved by insects.

White

Echinops Star Frost: Position: Full/ Part Sun, Ht: 90cm, Flowers: July - September
I grow this cool white flowered perennial in our mixed border, its architectural flowerheads look great in a border or as a cut flower.
