This was a fireplace with flue liner that gas engineer refused to connect up a new gas fire. Apparently a professional bunch of cowboys thought it acceptable to fit liner directly on top of fireback, so fireplace removed tru flue gather adaptor fitted, sealed and fireplace refitted.

If you have just bought or are buying a house with an open coal fire and don't know the history of the fire get it tested before using it. A surveyor will state in his report that there is or are fires in the house but as to them being safe to use they'll probably state they don't know, So get them tested as carbon monoxide kills.
