Woodcroft Landscapes & Nursery Woodcroft Landscapes was founded in 1999 by Stephen Magrath. In 1994 Stephen returned to Nursery work in a large cash and carry plant nursery.

Having started his career in plant propagation in Co Wicklow, he later worked in grounds maintenance at Windsor safari park and Juddmonte Farms Wargrave and associated houses in central London. Stephen has worked extensively in landscaping since the age of 16 in both commercial and amenity horticulture.

Rugosa Rose 'Delahaye'

One of my favourite shrub roses, Rugosa 'Delahaye' produces masses of strongly scented double flowers in rich pink-purple shades throughout the summer.

Not only does it provide weeks of colour, it also produces attractive rose hips later in the year, adding interest well into winter.

Rugosa roses are incredibly tough, reliable plants. They are hardy, low maintenance, and generally free from many of the common problems that affect other roses, making them an excellent choice for gardens across Northern Ireland.

Best planted in a sunny position, they are ideal for adding colour, fragrance and wildlife value to borders and larger planting schemes.

Planting now underway at this new coastal garden at Ballyholme Bay, with plants supplied from the Woodcroft nursery and selected to suit the exposed seaside setting.

This new home, built by RossKyle, with garden design by Emma Rayner. Emma, along with the homeowner, engaged Woodcroft to supply and plant a carefully selected range of plants to complement the design and coastal location.

The scheme includes a mix of structural shrubs, hardy perennials and feature planting, including a large tree fern selected from the nursery to add height, texture and character.

Coastal gardens need plants that can handle wind, salt air and strong light, while still bringing colour, movement and long-term structure to the space.

New High-Spec Trailer

We've recently added a new high-spec MCN trailer to help improve efficiency when transporting trees, plants and materials to projects across Northern Ireland.

The trailer features front and rear ladder racks, a remote-control winch and a range of additional upgrades designed to make loading, unloading and transport safer and more efficient.

Investing in the right equipment allows us to handle larger trees, mature planting and landscaping materials more effectively, helping projects run smoothly from the nursery to the final planting location.

Whether it's a single specimen tree or a full landscape installation, having the right machinery and transport equipment is an important part of delivering quality work.

Planting a Contemporary Garden in Gilnahirk

Woodcroft’s role in this project was focused on supplying and planting a carefully chosen mix of nursery-grown plants to soften the new layout, add structure and bring long-term colour and interest.

This scheme includes Prunus ‘Amanogawa’, Magnolia, Prunus laurocerasus ‘Genolia’, Hydrangea ‘Runaway Bride’, Agapanthus, Bergenia, Tiarella, H**e, Sophora ‘Sun King’, Vinca and structured box hedging, all selected to complement the design, aspect and scale of the property.

From kitchen garden planting to front boundary screening and future seating areas, every planting choice helps the garden feel more established, balanced and complete.

Shrub of the week - Deutzia kalmiiflora a deciduous shrub with a semi-weeping habit, beautiful simple, apple-green serrated foliage and in May and June, produces panicles of pale pink flowers that are darker pink on the reverse of the petals and when in bud. Grows well in sun and part shade.

Star Jasmine and Mature Hedging for Marks & Spencer, Ballyhackamore

A recent commercial planting project completed at Marks & Spencer, Ballyhackamore, combining 2 metre mature hedging with Star Jasmine along the Newtownards Road boundary.

The mature hedge provides immediate screening, structure and a cleaner overall appearance from day one. In narrower areas where there wasn’t enough space for full hedge planting to establish properly, Star Jasmine was used instead, creating an evergreen screen that will gradually soften and cover the boundary while adding scented seasonal flowering.

For prominent roadside and commercial locations, planting like this helps soften hard boundaries, improve presentation and create a more polished long-term finish.

Using a combination of mature hedging and climbers allows each area to be planted appropriately while maintaining a consistent overall look across the site.

Tree of the week Carpinus Betulus Fastigiata - Hornbeam. A fabulous medium sized tree with pyramidal habit. Slender in its youth, it can often be seen growing in residential areas despite the fact that it develops “middle age spread”, reaching up to 10 m wide. It grows well on most soils, including clay and chalk.
