The wind industry is growing—but the most useful career message is not simply that “green jobs are coming.” It is that the sector will need more people with the right mix of safety training, technical competence and role-specific experience.

The 2025 UK Wind Industry Skills Intelligence Report found that more than 55,000 people currently work across UK wind: nearly 40,000 in offshore wind and just over 15,000 in onshore wind. Offshore employment increased by 24% in two years, and the total UK wind workforce could exceed 112,000 by 2030.

The technician requirement is global too. The Global Wind Workforce Outlook produced by GWEC and GWO forecast that 532,000 people would require construction, installation, operations and maintenance training to support projected wind deployment by the end of 2028. Around 40% of those roles would need to be filled by new entrants.

That creates opportunity—but it is important to understand what the figures do and do not mean.

GWO Basic Safety Training provides industry-recognised safety training in Working at Height, First Aid, Manual Handling and Fire Awareness. It can support access to wind-industry pathways, but it is not a trade qualification and does not guarantee employment. Employers may also require technical qualifications, practical experience, medical fitness and additional training for the specific role or site.

For someone considering the sector, the right starting point is to identify the job you want to perform and build the complete pathway around it—not simply collect certificates.

Technical Operations | Containment should be considered as part of the preparation and coating method—not added as an afterthought once work is ready to begin.

Before abrasive blasting, mechanical preparation or spray application starts, the containment arrangements should reflect the surface being treated, the coating system, the work location and any activities continuing nearby.

Depending on the task, those arrangements may need to control dust, spent abrasive, coating debris or overspray while providing suitable ventilation, visibility and safe access for the team carrying out the work.

This reflects the wider requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003, under which exposure to hazardous substances must be prevented or adequately controlled. HSENI guidance also highlights the role of properly designed local exhaust ventilation in capturing airborne dust, mist and vapour before it reaches workers.

The detail matters. Containing debris is not enough if the arrangement restricts airflow, obscures the workface or interferes with safe movement. The method should also establish how waste will be collected, segregated, assessed and transferred for appropriate recovery or disposal. Where the resulting material is hazardous, the Hazardous Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005 may also apply.

A rope access system begins long before the first ascent.

For someone starting IRATA Level 1, learning how each component fits into the system is an essential part of building practical competence. Harness adjustment, equipment placement, connector orientation and rope management all affect how efficiently a technician can operate—and how clearly they can check their own set-up.

Industry Insights: A training certificate can be valid today and still create an operational gap next month.

That is why effective workforce planning starts well before the expiry date. The date is only one part of the picture. Employers also need to confirm the technician’s role, the correct scheme or refresher route, any prerequisites, project mobilisation dates, shift patterns and the cover required while the person is away training.

A useful 90-day review should answer four questions:

1. What competence is required for the work the technician will actually perform?
2. Is the planned course the correct scope and route—not simply the nearest available title?
3. When can training take place without leaving the project short of competent people?
4. Once completed, where will the updated evidence be recorded and made accessible?

Leaving those checks until the final weeks can narrow course availability and force reactive decisions. Planning earlier creates room to coordinate groups, protect operational cover and deal with any prerequisite or record issue before it becomes urgent.

Career Development: two spaces remain on our next four-day GWO Basic Safety Training course in Belfast.

Career Development: first-day nerves are not unusual when everything—from the harness to moving on ropes—is new.

Experience gained in construction, engineering, the military, emergency services or other practical environments can bring valuable transferable skills into rope access, wind, telecoms and industrial work.

That experience may support the transition, but it does not replace role-specific training or practical competence. The right pathway will depend on the work you want to carry out, the certification employers require and any additional site or medical requirements.

GWO Advanced Rescue Training is designed for technicians who may need to recover an injured person from challenging areas inside a wind turbine generator.

It builds beyond the rescue skills covered within GWO BST Working at Heights, using practical scenarios, industry-standard rescue equipment and techniques relevant to the WTG environment.

ART-H focuses on rescue from the hub, spinner and inside the blade.

ART-N focuses on rescue from the nacelle, tower and basement.

The modules can be completed separately or together as Combined ART, depending on the role and employer requirements. Under the current GWO ART V6 standard, single-rescuer training is integrated into both initial and refresher modules.

Dangle Academy delivers GWO Advanced Rescue Training from our Belfast centre, giving technicians practical experience within purpose-built training environments before those skills are needed on site.
