This project transforms a 1920s detached home in Wilstone, Hertfordshire into a generous three-bedroom property centred around a spacious kitchen–dining space designed for modern family living.

The gable-ended, double-storey extension is clad in natural slate, giving the building a sense of permanence — almost as if it has always been part of the house. By using traditional materials in contemporary ways, we’re able to create architecture that feels both striking and respectful of its setting, even within conservation areas.

The lower section is constructed from Accoya timber, a high-performance modified wood with an expected 50-year lifecycle, combining durability with a natural warmth that complements the slate above.

This is V house, situated in Penn, Buckinghamshire. We were asked to extend this existing house to form an opening plan dining and living space. Complete with a study and additional bedroom.

We achieved this by only extending less than 2m in a wraparound extension on the perimeter of the existing house.

Opening up the south facing side with new glazing, a pivoting door and bespoke curved skylights. This interior is defined by a stepped plywood ceiling which brings warm and ambience to the spaces below.

Tonight is opening night of the 2023 Wood Awards. We are delighted to be shortlisted as one of the UK’s best new timber buildings for our project DarkMatter.

The shortlisted projects exhibition is now open from today until 22nd September at the oxo tower gallery in London’s south bank.

It’s bound to be a great exhibition, it’s coupled with material matters a exploration of new materials in craft and building.
