Every home has one: the door that never quite sits the way it should.

You close it and there's a sliver of daylight at the edge. Or it needs a hip to shut. Or the latch only catches if you pull it towards you as you turn the key. It's been like it for months, so it feels normal, but a door that doesn't sit square isn't sealing, isn't engaging properly, and the mechanism underneath is doing extra work every single time.

There's a simple five-minute walk-around worth doing: close each door in turn and look at the gap where it meets the frame. Even all the way round means the door is sitting as it should. Uneven, or wider at one corner, means something has moved.

Another job a lot of people don't realise a locksmith does: misted and blown double glazing.

When a sealed unit fails, condensation creeps in between the two panes of glass and no amount of wiping clears it. The window isn't ruined and the whole frame doesn't need replacing. It's the glazed unit that's failed, and that can be swapped out on its own.

It's one of those jobs that sits between glazing and locksmithing, and it's part of the doors and windows work I do every week. One visit, the old blown unit out, the new one in, and the view is clear again.

Half term can put the back door through its paces. With children in and out to the garden, handles get lifted in a hurry and keys can disappear into coat pockets. On Halloween, the front door works harder than it does on any other night of the year.

Trick-or-treaters mean the door is opened and closed dozens of times in an evening, and on a multi-point locking door that's the full locking cycle every single time: handle lifted, door pulled shut, latch working away all evening. A door that's been quietly getting stiffer through October often picks exactly that night to show it.

There's one door in most homes that almost never gets checked: the conservatory door.

It gets used constantly in summer and barely at all once the colder weather arrives. So when the handle starts feeling stiff or it needs a lift before it'll lock, nobody notices, because nobody's touching it.

That's usually how it goes wrong. The door sits closed for weeks, then one evening you go to lock it properly and it won't have it. Often the mechanism has been quietly stiffening the whole time, and a small adjustment now is a far easier conversation than a door that won't secure when you need it to.

Next time you're passing it, give the handle a lift and turn the key. If it's smooth, all good. If it fights back, it's worth a look.

After several days of October rain, doors can start to feel different. Wet leaves gather on the doorstep, and moisture can work its way along the edge of the frame while the door stays shut for hours.
