Day 9

🔨 Pour the concrete floor

Everybody needs a floor (because we don't have hover cars yet) so we pour a 150mm deep concrete floor over the top of a compacted sub base. Generally speaking, as a material concrete is not very good in tension and therefore metal grids or 'road mesh' is added to prevent cracking. Sand blinding is used over the top of the sub base to ensure that the DPM (damp proof membrane) is not damaged by any sharp stones underneath.
Levelling it is a bit of a dark art, so I let Tom do that while I cheer him on from the side-lines.

Day 8 - Oak

It was a great day on site today as we managed to install the oak frame successfully. The large 6m long oak beam is 200kg so we use a winch lift to drop it down onto metal spindles. The spindles are already built into the brick piers. The oak frame is connected together using traditional mortice and tenon joints and 'draw-bores'. The draw bores have an intentional interference fit so that when the pegs are hammered through they pull the joint very tight. The shoulders on the tenons gives the joint its rigidity and the joint must be super tight to make it work.

For the OSB sheathing we use a rail square from to quickly and accurately cut complex shapes to size for the side walls. Fastened in place with galvanised ring shank nails using the excellent gasless first fix nail gun.
