Purple Passion or velvet plant, is a species of flowering plant in the daisy family Asteraceae. It is native to Southeast Asia but grown in many other places as a house plant. In warm regions, it is frequently grown outdoors on patios and in gardens rather than inside buildings, and hence it has escaped into the wild in Africa, Australia, South America, Mesoamerica, Florida, and a few other places.[

How do you take care of a purple passion plant?

Your purple passion plant prefers moderate to bright indirect light. You allow 25% of the soil volume to dry before watering. When watering, try not to get the leaves wet as the hairs can trap moisture and cause the leaves to become waterlogged. Your purple passion plant prefers a fairly humid environment.

Beautiful Tradescantia hanging plant

Tradescantia plants are much loved for their variegated leaves, deep purple color (although there are also green varieties!) and for how extremely easy they are to propagate. Tradescantia. make a lovely, understated statement in outdoor garden beds or planters, and are perhaps even more striking indoors when allowed to trail in hanging baskets. Here’s how to make sure they thrive and put their best foot forward.

Plant Types

As with most plants, it’s hard to pin down and distinguish between the different types. You might know these guys by other names, like inch plants or Purple Heart. There are many different varieties, including Tradescantia fulminensis, Tradescantia zebrina, and Tradescantia albiflora. The most popular ones have green or silvery variegated leaves with purple undersides, although they can also come in pink as well.

Light and Temperature

Tradescantia likes bright, indirect light. They need a good amount of light; if they don’t get it, you’ll notice that their leaf markings begin to fade. Direct sun, however, will scorch their leaves (with the exception being the purple queen variety, which loves full sun).

Tradescantia thrives in temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees, so they do well in typical indoor temperatures. Outdoors, they prefer a mild climate that doesn’t drop below 50 degrees. Frost will kill them.

Watering and Fertilizing

Tradescantia loves moisture. Don’t ever let your plant get too dry, especially in winter. To keep soil evenly moist, a regular watering schedule is best. Water until water drains through the bottom of the pot, taking care that your plant won’t sit in water.

Tradescantia thrives in humidity, and they love regular misting. Leaf tips will turn brown without adequate humidity. Placing the plant on a tray of pebbles in water is one way to ensure ambient moisture.

Fertilizing your Tradescantia isn’t absolutely necessary, but they will reward you with better growth if you do feed them. Fertilize only in the spring and summer with a half-strength liquid fertilizer monthly or a controlled-release fertilizer.

Pruning
Due to the vining nature they’re named for, Tradescantia needs regular pruning to maintain a pleasing, bushy appearance. Try pinching back about a fourth of the plant to encourage branching and increase fullness.

A special note: No matter how well you care for your Tradescantia, they tend to get dry and leggy after about a year or so. But the plants are so easy to propagate that keeping your plant ā€œgoingā€ is just a matter of planting cuttings.

Hanging curly lipstick plant

The Aeschynanthus, otherwise known as the curly lipstick plant, is an evergreen houseplant that blooms year-round. Native to Southeast Asia, this plant gets its nickname from the shape of its red flowers that resemble a tube of lipstick.

While they aren’t a vine, they grow similarly, with the flowers clustering around the waxy and pointy leaves. This growth pattern makes them ideal for hanging baskets or draping down the side of furniture. Although you’ll be able to enjoy flowers from this plant nearly all year round.

Since these are beginner-friendly plants, their care isn’t complicated. However, it’s always nice to have a clear idea of what a plant needs so you can be sure it lives a long and happy life in your home. Here's what you need to do:

Step 1: Keep the soil moist and do not let it dry out completely between waterings.

Step 2: Invest in a moisture meter or use your finger to test for dry soil.

If the top 2 or 3 inches of soil are dry, it's time to water your plant. A moisture meter will give you more accurate readings of your soil's dryness, which can be particularly helpful if you often overwater or underwater your houseplants.
