Every year, since 1947, the people of Norway have given the people of London a Christmas tree. This gift is in gratitude for Britain's support for Norway during World War II.

The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is usually a Norwegian spruce (Picea abies) over 20 metres high and 50 to 60 years old. It is selected from the forests surrounding Oslo with great care several months, even years, in advance.

The tree is felled in November during a ceremony in which the Lord Mayor of Westminster, the British ambassador to Norway and the Mayor of Oslo participate.

A Norway Spruce is an excellent outdoor tree. Do you like yours with White or multicoloured lights?

The custom of displaying Christmas trees was introduced to Britain in the late 18th century by Queen Charlotte, consort of George III, although it was a yew tree rather than a fir that was used. The Christmas tree was popularised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the 19th century, with images of their family gathering around the Christmas tree being published in the Illustrated London News in 1848.

Windsor Castle is known to have a 20-foot-tall Nordmann Fir located in St George’s Hall. A brilliant indoor tree with a Royal Seal of approval.
