If you take Common Road out of Wrangle and turn left when you come to Wrangle Bank, a little way along on the left you can see the remains of an 11th century motte and bailey castle. Substantial earthworks remain of the castle, which was the centre of a manorial estate belonging to Waltham Abbey in Essex. The remains can be seen from the road, but the field is private property.

This empty niche would once have held the image of a saint venerated by the guilds that once occupied the building. The arch you can see at the foot of the buttress once gave external access to the chapel of the Guild of Corpus Christi. Approximately 19 guilds were based at the Stump - some had chapels, some had altars, some just had candles as the focus of their veneration.

Subtle and understated, but has many of the details that make a Georgian town house - sash windows, doorcases, the edge of the roof hidden by a parapet. Is this a pastiche Georgian building? Or a real Georgian building that happens to have been built in the twenty-first century?

Usually described as "the housekeeper" at Fydell House during the Second World War, Phoebe Rennell is a much more interesting and talented character than that banal title conveys. Born in 1882 in Clapham, London she attended Clapham School of Art, and later worked as a calligrapher, illuminator and illustrator in the Arts & Crafts tradition (perhaps her most famous series of illustrations were for an edition of Tennyson's Lady of Shallot). She was in Fydell House during the air raid that set fire to the house and wrecked the attic flat, destroying almost all her possessions.

Her illustrations are wonderful, combining an intense sense of feeling with an inspired mastery of line and colour.

The illustration below sold at auction recently for ยฃ200, so similar works may be within the budget of the Preservation Trust when we commence refurnishing the house.

Instead of Pevsner's usual meticulous item by item treatment, when it came to Pen Street he just gives an endorsement of the "early 19th century pairs". Perhaps the Pevsner researchers were overwhelmed by the number of Georgian houses in Boston (more than any other town of its size in the country). This pair are modest in scale, restrained in detail, and yet beautifully symmetrical and balanced.
