Forgotten Flowers

Apparently, I’ve been deadheading my dahlias wrong. 🤦‍♀️🌸
I thought you just removed the dead flower.
So I did.
Very efficiently, I might add.
Except… if you’re growing dahlias for cut flowers, you want to follow that stem back down into the plant and cut it back to just above a strong pair of nodes.
Why?
Because cutting the stem properly encourages new, stronger flowering stems.
And here’s the bit nobody tells you…
⏰ Those new stems can take around 28 days to come back.
So what you do to your dahlia today could affect what you’re cutting nearly a month from now.
Which is slightly annoying when you want flowers NOW.
So:
🌸 Don’t just pluck off the dead flower.
✂️ Follow the stem down.
🌱 Cut back above a strong pair of nodes.
⏳ Then give it time to do its thing.
I was just removing the evidence.
Apparently, that isn't gardening.
Save this for your next deadheading session.
And share it with someone who is currently wandering around their dahlias removing flower heads like I was. 😂

Five arrangements, one very talented flower arranger… and a thoroughly entertaining evening 🌸
Today we had the pleasure of watching , flower arranger and judge, demonstrate five beautiful arrangements Boston & District Flower Lovers Club
And honestly… watching someone who really knows what they're doing turn a pile of flowers into something quite extraordinary is rather addictive.
Each arrangement was completely different, and it was fascinating to watch the ideas develop from the first few stems to the finished pieces.
There were plenty of laughs along the way too, which made the whole demonstration as entertaining as it was inspiring.
It certainly gave me plenty of ideas for our own flowers here at Forgotten Flowers and a rather long list of things I'd now like to have a go at! 🌿

Colour : Warm Amber Peach Petals with a Crimson underside
Height : 90 - 120 cms 🫪 Not in my field! More like 50cms

A true beauty and although the stem length has been poor this year....I don't regret the space it's taken. LOVE IT😍

This is one of those flowers that looks completely different depending on the light.

Which means, naturally, I have taken approximately 47 photographs of it.JUst kidding.
None of them are quite enough.
😂 Sometimes as seen here with a pink blush or even a spalsh of cerise. Just like it had been splattered with paint. Or just in white. We've had all three this year 😉

And I'm already refusing to choose a favourite.
This one reminds me of sherbert flying saucers. Just love her too 😉
