Working Side by Side: 27 Years in Business and Marriage
When I first began working in the family business with my husband, I never imagined it would become a 27-year partnership—one that would shape not only our working lives, but our marriage itself.
Working together sounds romantic in theory. In practice, it is layered, challenging, and deeply rewarding. There is no clean line between “home” and “work” when your business partner shares your last name. Conversations that begin at the office often continue over dinner, and decisions made at work can follow you home. Over the years, we learned that success depended not just on commitment to the business, but on respect for each other as individuals.
One of our greatest lessons was learning to trust each other’s strengths. We didn’t always agree, and we didn’t always get it right, but we learned when to step back and when to lean in. Clear roles, honest communication, and the ability to disagree without damaging the relationship became essential tools—just as important as any business plan.
There were seasons of growth and seasons of strain. Times when the business demanded everything we had, and moments when we questioned whether working together was worth the sacrifice. But there were also shared victories that felt sweeter because we achieved them together—milestones we could celebrate not just as business partners, but as husband and wife.
Looking back, working alongside my husband for nearly three decades has taught me patience, resilience, and the value of partnership in its truest sense. The business may have been the reason we worked together, but our shared values and commitment are what sustained us.
It hasn’t always been easy—but it has been worth it.
