The existing context of site is so important in informing and inspiring any design. Ensuring the longevity of a scheme for decades to come, relies on an integration into the existing. 'Contemporary' doesn't have to mean different, and 'traditional' doesn't have to mean the same.

Ecology surveys.... Don't get caught out with the timings. If your project likely requires ecology and protected species surveys you have limited timeframes to get them instructed and completed. Species-specific timings differ, however the cut-off for many is the end of the summer.

Making good progress on our listed building project in Bath. Site cleared ready for pouring the new reinforced slab and er****on of the reinforced retaining walls within the existing hillside. A grade 3 type waterproofing system will be installed where we have gone belt and braces with a type A and C system (keep the water out, and manage it if it gets in). Given the age of the property dating back to the mid-1800s the existing structure has done a good job of keeping the water out which is largely to do with the underlying rocky ground conditions. This is a fairly small project but has been a challenging technical design!

Material Detailing 02..... This image looks at the use of brickwork. Choices on different brick bonds to focus attention. Soldier course and-a-half to announce the parapet, angled brickwork to break up large expanses of stretcher course. Then consistency with the integration of other materials. Slim profile aluminium parapet capping, slim stone header course at windows, and slim tile cloak with thin mortar bed to the roof verge. Many elements to consider and coordinate to create a coherent elevation.

Material choices make a big difference. Not purely on the individual choice but how they connect with others, how they are fixed, and how they are processed. Throughout May we will share some of our project examples and the decisions faced. In this image we have two materials. Brick and Flint.
Which brick choice? What size and colour? What mortar joint and colour? What coursing pattern?
Size of flint? All roughly the same size or varied? Mortar joint type and colour. How to 'knapp' the flint? How to finish the flint.
We think the knapped flint looks beautiful!

We approach every project with a clear purpose: to add value.
Whether it’s maximising the potential of a new-build site, refining layouts to better support family life, or thoughtfully reworking existing farm buildings.
Whatever the brief, we design to improve.
