Season for managing your apple trees

Season for managing your apple trees

Pruning apple trees in late winter is an opportunity to encourage growth of more productive wood - with the aim of bearing a better quality crop of fruit. As the branches become more congested they will bear smaller, inferior fruit and the crowded conditions also encourage the spread of pests and diseases.

Pruning checklist:
🍎 First remove dead or diseased branches.
🍏 Prune damaged branches and any crossing branches that are rubbing.
🍎 Only shorten previous year's growth on main branch tips by a 1/3.
🍏 Leave young side branches unpruned so they develop fruit buds in the 2nd year.
🍎 Remove strong shoots growing towards the centre of the canopy.
🍏 Stand back and check the shape. Don't remove more than 20% of the canopy.
