A Whiter Shade of Pale.
Soft blush pink blooms that slowly fade to near white. A proper rosy fragrance and a quiet elegance about the plant that seems to suit a British garden rather well.

A Whiter Shade of Pale is a very good rose all round.

We’ve written about it properly over on our blog, growing tips, flowering etc. Worth a quick read if you’re thinking of adding this rose to your garden.

Rich raspberry petals, old-rose charm, and unforgettable fragrance — Darcy Bussell by David Austin

We grow her here as cut flowers for florists who want something with a bit more character than a standard imported garden rose.

I spy with my little eye….

The first Koko Loco about to flower. In a week or so they’ll be looking like the 2nd pic once we have a bit of sun and warmth.

Jude the Obscure…. What a rose

Soft apricot buds opening to peachy creamy, perfectly cupped blooms. And the fragrance — rich fruit, citrus and old rose — is every bit as beautiful.

Which makes it all the more bittersweet that David Austin has retired it from the range. A real favourite for so many gardeners, and one of those roses that never really needed introducing once you’d seen it in flower.

Not always the neatest or most modern performer perhaps, but full of charm, personality and that unmistakably romantic look the older Austins do so well.

Retirements are part of modern rose breeding — newer varieties tend to offer stronger disease resistance, repeat flowering and more uniform performance — but there’s no denying that some cultivars leave a real gap behind them. Jude the Obscure is one of those in our opinion.

If you already grow it, cherish it.

The season's finally here.

Our first flush of roses are opening and, honestly, they've been worth the wait - winter was certainly long enough here in Mid Wales.

Fresh-cut stems of British Roses are ready to ship to florists and designers from next week. If you'd like to discuss availability, give us a shout.

Just a few of the varieties bursting into flower with us - and it’s still April. Just.
