Just a little roof job at Quantock Lodge.
A building that started life as a Camellia house (green house). Which had 4 glass lanterns on the roof. Then when the big house was converted into a hospital, the camellia house building was converted into a Chapel and in the cellar was the mortuary and they removed the lanterns and erected two apex asbestos roofs. Then the big house was converted into a school and they turned the chapel into a drama room and decided to paint everything inside black.
Today the big house is back to a home and has groups stay for a holiday or just as a meeting point, also some times a wedding or party venue.
But sadly the camellia house/chapel/drama room building was left to slowly rot and decay.
Then I was called in, to bring it back to life.
First of all we were going to replace the roof with two apex tiled roofs to match the big house, but once the asbestos was removed, it revealed the original timber from the lanterns and had the notches in the timbers where the glazing bar were fixed. So the big decision was made to bring it back to look as original as possible, but using some modern materials to reduce maintenance and last as long as possible.
Unfortunately we could not save anything from the original roof.
But everyone is more than amazed by the finished roof. We still have work to do on the inside, which is to follow.
