Lots of late colour in The Garden at the nursery that now has a koshi-kake or ‘waiting bench’ where all paths meet…. The waiting room is an intrinsic part of the tea garden, where guests wait to be greeted by the tea master who invites them to follow him to the tea house…(in time my paths will lead, I hope, on to my interpretation of a teahouse).

Two purple leafed Hydrangea aspera forms. ‘Koki’ and ‘Hot Chocolate’. After living with both for three or four years I prefer Koki for its paler and wider flower and its general habit, close to that of H. aspera villosa. One autumn Koki’s leaves turned bright yellow while retaining their purple undersides.. an extraordinary effect. The other great asset of the asperas is their ability to bounce back from spring frosts and still flower… like to plant a forest of them!

Another favourite in the garden; Bupleurum fruticosum. Any tips for striking from cuttings gratefully received!!!
