I’ve taken some months out to finish renovating our farm in France. The house is now done and we’re going to start on the inner garden constructing terraces with pergolas to create seating areas. Unfortunately, of the 60 odd trees we planted out in the front fields last winter, only three have survived- the one in the first picture(squint ) a Sorbus, I only found today at the top of the front meadow. Bless it. One Tilia cordata made it. They were fine in the spring - I had banked on them putting on good roots over the Winter as a water table here is high being so close to a river, but they just couldn’t cope with the successive heat waves we’ve had this year. The freak storm wrecked the existing trees - seriously thinning them out so yet again shade is hard to come by.
We have plenty of self seeded oaks and this Forsythia (formally blobbed as is the way around here) is acting as a nursery to at least 6 young oaks, so eventually I may get my woodland ….

A freak hailstorm- Natures way of pruning!!! Roofs wrecked, cars smashed and entire fields of crops flattened all around. Closer to home - every single piece of deadwood plus plenty of live, ripped out of the trees, all the flowers de headed. It’s taken me three days to clean up the mess and has greatly contributed to my Hugelkutur!

Is there anything more exquisite than a Rose? Sheer perfection.
Unfortunately, which varieties these are has been forgotten; two are actually ground cover roses (R. Kent?) that have been forced to grow up providing quite good cover against this slatted fence. The third is a rambler I think by the way it’s growing. All three were taken up from my old garden, spent a miserable year in pots and were put into the new garden last summer and are thriving.

Tooting- a little further a field than our usual patch, but another neglected tiny garden turned into something beautiful and useful. You pay even more for your little patch of sky in London but at least now this little bit of heaven can be enjoyed.

The transformation is complete. All the planting is in place; the child safety gate has been installed and it’s great to see that the family are using with space. So lovely to see the little touches they have added.

Oh the glamour! At 3M Ruffec getting the drive belt fixed on ‘Minnie Driver‘ my trusty drive on, before tackling the front meadow . I finally got it mown on the last day. The good news is that all trees planted last November have all taken, a relief - just need them to put a bit of height on now. We’ve also got moles - not sure if that’s good or bad 🤔
