Woohoo 🙌🏼 summer is on its way! I hope you’re all keeping well, as well as possible during such difficult times?!

I’m here to chat to you about what are termed ‘nationals’ in trades business. A National is a large company, usually with a call centre and they act pretty much like a middle man, and add the associated costs onto your final bill for the privilege 😢 they also usually short change the tradesperson you’ve employed 😢

How to spot a National? If you call a locksmith/plumber/Carpenter and you get through to a call centre, chances are VERY high that it’s a National and if you’re lucky it’ll only be £50-£80 extra added to your bill if you use them.

You want to talk directly to the trades person you’re employing. That way you’ll get the best price possible as there’s no middleman 😉

With the cooler and wetter weather incoming, have you performed your winter maintenance on your uPVC doors and windows?

We always advise that you perform maintenance on all doors and windows at least every 6 months. It’s all the more important when the weather turns wintry!

• uPVC doors - Start by opening the door fully and checking the sill to remove and dirt and grime that’s gathered. Then using a PTFE/silicon lubricant, give all moving parts a good spray! Then open and close the door a few times to get the lubricant into all the nooks & crannies!

If your door is becoming more difficult to open and close, or lock then I’d suggest calling us to inspect and adjust - so that you’re not putting pressure on the mech/gearbox and other moving parts.

• uPVC windows - use the same process as above.

(Quick tip- we see lots of doors malfunction because of ppl putting chestnuts 🌰 on their sills to discourage spiders. Don’t do it! It can be a very expensive lesson)
