Today The Talented Gardener went back to work for the first time in 2020.

It was -4 degrees when I started, in one of my favorite gardens on the Sussex Downs, but what a beautiful sunny day.

Even in that temperature you could feel the promise of spring time in the air and the birds were singing loudly.

Today I did one of my favorite jobs - pruning climbing wisteria.
I have seven to maintain from one to a hundred years old - two done, five to go.

Last week I received some flowers in the post from a very dear friend.

What interested me about them especially was that the tulips were still attached to their bulbs and the recommendation was to leave them like that in water.

This is the flowers a whole week later. The tulips grew at least four inches in height and have remained rigidly upright. Plus afterwards the bulbs can be planted in the garden for next year.

What a wonderful idea and a lovely gift. Thank you Deb Willsher and Bloom and Wild.

Fascinating and completely understandable when to observe how trees grow.
