Finally...Vibrant Veg is up and running. We're starting slowly and carefully with a small number of plants for sale to local growers and will see how it goes. We're learning so much about how to grow commercially and it's a steep curve for sure.

My energies will be put into these FB and Instagram pages from now on https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100092640219748 and https://www.instagram.com/myvibrantveg/ but I want to thank you all for being so enthusiastic and liking my entirely ordinary pics of things that I grow. Happy gardening!

Hello! The reason for the silence on this site is because Ana and I have been busy getting our new business up and running. You're the first people to hear about Vibrant Veg: perennial plants for now and the future. You can see all our seeds growing in the propagation greenhouse and we've now potted on the larger ones ready to sell.

We'll be ready for our first sales opportunity at the Get Growing Garden trail on the weekend of June 3rd and 4th at Bridge Farm https://www.bristolfoodnetwork.org/blog/get-growing-garden-trail/ So come along and see what's on sale! Links to our new Facebook and Instagram pages to follow soon.

Having run out of space on my allotment I thought I'd clear a little patch on Bridge Farm for some seed potatoes (main crop Valor for those who're interested!). As you can see the ground is rather compacted because we had the pigs there so it took a couple of hours to fork it through. The result? Potatoes are in but I'm doing intense yoga stretches 3 times a day for my aching hips 🤣

Last week I went to this really useful half-day workshop called Success with Seeds. I got quite a few useful tips on preparing the modules, how to plant seeds and how to water. Thank you Sara Venn from Incredible Edible (https://www.incredibleedible.org.uk/) for making it such an informative and practical event. Here you can see my module with all my lovely seeds. I'm happy to report that the lettuce, endive and cauliflower are already coming up. I covered them all with fleece today as the nights are supposed to get a bit chilly this week.

Look at this inspired gift from my mum! Medieval herbs in a neat compost block that you hydrate and then leave to grow. I just started them off yesterday and will update you when I start to see some signs of tiny leafy life.

Up on the allotment today planting garlic and broad beans I thought I'd pick some curly kale for dinner. Curious as to when the purple sprouting would be ready (FYI - looking promising!) I spied broccoli shoots on my old plants. This was a real surprise as I harvested the larger florets quite a few weeks ago and thought that was it. How lovely to find them sprouting again. The brassicas that keep on giving 😂

We think deer are getting into the forest garden and dining out on our trees, shrubs and vegetables. So last Friday Ana and I got clever with an impact driver, lengths of wood and nylon string to raise the current fence to 1.8m - apparently the magic height for deer prevention. The white fabric strips are to prevent deer strangulation which, let's face it, isn't the preferred outcome. I hope our efforts pay off. 🤞 🌳

Lots of lovely seeds have just gone in - things I'm starting off indoors. 3 different varieties of tomatoes, aubergines, jalapeno and basket of fire chilies, red peppers, Buck's Horn Plantain salad leaf (bit of an experiment as I saved the seed from last year) and coriander. This is such an exciting time of the year!

We have some lovely things waiting in the greenhouse to be planted in the forest garden. 3 trees (medlar, greengage and alder), 4 strawberry plants, 4 ground raspberries and a partridge in a pear tree! The trees should be fine to put in now but we might hold off with the others until it warms up a bit more. 🌳

I spent a couple of hours on Friday digging out weeds from our perennial veg nursery. What looks like a dumpy bag full of waste to us is a gourmet delicacy to our pigs Pearl and Barley. Weeds listed in order of deliciousness are therefore: bramble roots, bindweed roots and grass. They didn't seem too enamoured of nettle roots which clearly proves what discerning palates they have!

Here we are again - salad leaves in the greenhouse, just as I did last year! I'm only growing mixed leaves and red mustard this time as last year the wasabino took over and it was a bit too peppery and overpowering to eat in large quantities. These are milder and were going well with the sorrel and buck's horn plantain that I have growing outside. Sadly the heavy frost has decimated these but as they're perennials they should be coming back in the spring. Ah, the beauty of perennials...I can't sing their praises enough.
