That’s a wrap on our "Winter Migrants" series!

From the Marsh Harrier’s dramatic recovery - a true conservation success story - to the tiny Merlin, hunting low to the ground with ferocious speed, every bird holds a chapter of the UK's ecological narrative. We’ve covered the legendary Barnacle Goose and its cliff-jumping goslings, the world-travelling Pink-feet, the UV-seeing Redwing, and the enigmatic Water Pipit that literally flies the "wrong" way from the Alps.

These species can be seen in habitats managed by incredible organisations like the Wildlife Trusts and The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. Whose land, efforts and campaigns for awareness provide a lifeline for wildlife in an increasingly urban world.

Understanding these seasonal movements is so important. Every sighting and observation helps to chart population health and secure key habitats needed for survival.

Thank you to everyone who followed the journey and shared your own sightings. This is not the end of our work...

Discovery never ends - follow along for our next deep dive into British wildlife, starting soon!

oooo exciting! We'll be adding all of these to our list too.

As the colder months set in and particularly when the ground freezes or snow covers everything, access to fresh water becomes a matter of survival for much of our garden wildlife. We often focus on food, but water is just as vital.

For the smallest visitors, like bees, ladybirds, and other insects, a shallow dish filled with pebbles and topped with water provides a safe drinking spot, allowing them to land without falling in - check in fairly regularly to make sure it's not frozen. This is also useful for summer too when there are less puddles around.

Birds, in particular, rely heavily on open water for drinking and bathing, even in winter. A regular bird bath is a welcome resource. To help prevent it from freezing solid, a small floating object like a lightweight ball can often keep a patch of water open. Just remember to clean bird baths regularly to prevent the spread of disease – a quick weekly scrub with hot water is usually all it takes.

For those with ponds, a complete freeze-over can deplete oxygen, especially in smaller, shallower ones. It's best to avoid smashing the ice, as the shockwaves can harm pond inhabitants. Instead, gently melt a hole by holding a pan of warm (not boiling) water on the surface for a few minutes. Creating even a small opening allows gases to escape and oxygen to enter, making a big difference to the frogs, newts, and invertebrates sheltering below. Providing these simple water provisions can make a world of difference for a thriving wildlife garden through winter.

Ready for spring? The best time to prepare is now. A little effort this autumn to create a bare seedbed, sow your native wildflower seeds, and let the rain work its magic will set the stage for a vibrant display next year. A simple patch can make a world of difference for pollinators.

It was a genuine privilege to join the incredible team and residents at We Can Make for their Making Together Summer Programme.

In August we spent the day building rainwater planters with the community and talking about sustainable water practices - vital knowledge for our increasingly dry springs and summers. It was inspiring to see a community so dedicated to creating resilient, green, and truly inclusive spaces.

A special thank you to Tay from We Can Make for the warm invitation and for the immense heart and hard work she puts into this important initiative. The food, the company, and the conversation were all amazing.

Here’s a ‘team effort’ in action, proving that sustainable change is built together.

An autumnal garden is a busy one. This season, consider leaving the tidying for nature. A simple pile of leaves or branches creates a vital habitat, while spent seed heads provide essential food. It's also the perfect time to plant for spring, ensuring early blooms for you and for pollinators. Sometimes, the most beneficial thing we can do is a little less.

As autumn settles in, our local wildlife is actively preparing for winter. You might still spot bees on late blooms, see bats foraging at dusk, and notice birds stocking up as migrants arrive. It's also a peak month for wild mushrooms.

In your garden, this is a key time to support them. Consider cleaning out nest boxes, scattering native wildflower seeds, maintaining a pond, or building a simple log pile to offer vital shelter ready for the colder months.

🌿 100 Native Wildflowers Planted!
This weekend, our community came together to plant 100 locally sourced plug plants from Avon Wildlife Trust's fantastic Grow Wilder – huge thanks to Shaun!

📍 The Species (all Bristol/clay-soil friendly):
Common valerian • Tansy • Meadow cranesbill • Ox-eye daisy • Corky-fruited water dropwort • Yarrow • Teasel • Self-heal • Dropwort • Meadow buttercup • Common knapweed • White clover

🌱 Why Plugs?
While our seeded area has done well despite the dry spring, these plugs will boost biodiversity faster as part of our 3-year habitat project.

🌼 Community Love:
A massive thank you to everyone who’s helped water this bed over the past month – your care is already making a difference!

Join us this Sunday in Victoria Park for a relaxed and inclusive planting session. We’ll be adding 100 native, locally sourced plug plants to brighten up the park and give wildlife a boost.

We'll be planting from 11am - 1pm (unless we finish before, in which case we'll update via the Wildlife Noticeboard WhatsApp Group)

Bring a watering can, trowel, gloves, or just yourself - everyone is welcome. Plant one plug, help water, or simply share a cuppa while we dig in. Kids, friends, and dogs included!
