Learning from the masters…

Did you know that archaeologists have discovered traces of timber frame houses in the UK from over 10,000 years ago? In our latest blog we look at the history of timber frame construction and show how we draw inspiration from the heritage timber frame buildings all over the UK 🔗Link in bio.

This might be the tallest staircase into a treehouse ever, at least we think it is... Built by the this could be the highest single staircase leading into a treehouse. It is 32m above the ground, and from my research there are some taller treehouses in Laos at the I have read in articles that some of your treehouses are 40m off the ground (I would love to know the real figures?) and accessed via zip wires, but I have not found a record of any taller single staircase built into a tree. If anyone is aware of one we would love to know!

This summer I had the honour of going to work for the on the most incredible project - a treehouse of truly epic proportions in the Amazon rainforest of Peru. Built by the treehouse community for the treehouse is a staggering 32m high supported by a massive Ficus tree. It takes 141 steps to reach the platform which pokes out above the jungle canopy. Not only was this the project of a lifetime, but it was a chance to see my friends and teachers at the treehouse community in India, whom I left 5 years ago when I returned to the UK to start . I had such an incredible time, the project totally blew my mind and pushed me to the limits of aerial construction. I’m going to be sharing a few photos and videos with you but head over to the masterminds to see the incredible work these guys do, and follow altasancturary for direct updates on this treehouse, or to book a stay...

Deck it out!

We nerded out properly with this concentrically laid decking. It was certainly more effort but look at the result! Usually, we lay our floor decking perpendicularly to the joists, but in this treehouse, we experimented with a bespoke joist structure which allowed us to lay our decking in a circular pattern.

♡ Sky high ♡
We love looking up ↟ into an exposed timber frame and seeing how all the joints and connections work together to make one complete structure. Even better when its a treehouse and the tree’s branches are woven through the frame.

⚒ It’s all in the details⚒
In this case the humble wooden pegs which hold the whole timber frame treehouse together. These small pegs must be shaved along the grain (rather than against it) for strength and tapered at one end so they drive through the mortise and tenon joint which holds the timber together. When dry fitting a timber frame the holes in the tenon piece are offset slightly so that the peg pulls the joint tight together.

↻↻ Look what’s around the corner… ↻↻
Curved staircases are a creative way to add beauty to a treehouse, all the while helping you head out in the right direction. In the case of the we used a curved staircase angled naturally towards the lawn as you walk down to the treehouse. We kiln dried Douglas fir (from our own solar powered kiln ) to make the smooth, curved handrail which guides your ascent.

⟁⟁ What the cruck…? ⟁⟁

As soon as we stepped into our client's garden, we could see exactly why they’d told us they wanted an open-sided, characterful treehouse to sip drinks in and take in the epic sea view.

The garden itself is beautifully landscaped and kept, with heritage features including stone walls and an A-frame outbuilding. We knew right away that the best option for them would be an open timber framed structure with a sweeping gable roof.

As the treehouse itself needed to be quite compact but also bold and elegant we came up with the idea of a tall cruck frame. A cruck frame is a traditional method that uses curved timber to create an 'A' shaped roof ⟁. This creates a stunning arch which maximises space and light - perfect for a dreamy sunset sea view.

We love this aspect which shows off the roundwood foundation posts ∏ ∏ which mirror the natural shape of a tree. We used wavey braces on the posts which were specially selected to look like branches. The braces are joined so seamlessly to the roundwood posts that you might be fooled into thinking that they are actual branches! Swipe left to take a look ↞↞↞
