More winter protection for plants in client gardens, although it’s quite mild here in Bristol 🌧️ 🌬️

Tree ferns two ways…

Firstly an open exposed garden. We fill the crown with bracken (straw works well too), we carefully bend the fronds inwards - see me 👀! We wrap the crown and fronds in hessian and tie in place with twine.

And an urban garden location. We fill the crown with bracken, use hessian strips to cover the crown and finish with a hessian wrap around the trunk kept in place with twine.

🛏️ Bedtime for tender plants over the winter here in Bristol.

First up 🍌 the banana plant Musa basjoo, put to bed 2 ways…

In an exposed windy rural garden. We remove the foliage and cut the trunks to the base. Add a layer of bracken or straw to tuck them in and a final blanket layer of fleece weighted to prevent it flying away.

Second method in an urban woodland garden. Foliage removed, trunks left in tact and a layer of fleece tied in place.

Either way, happy bananas tucked up until the last of the frosts of spring have gone 🌱

Big delivery of 850 spring flowering bulbs. A rural garden where Tulips 🌷 have become a favoured aperitif of the local 🦌 community! Time for something different…a lovely mix of white Narcisuss and Grape Hyacinths. Now we wait and 👀

Time to plant the spring flowering bulbs. Here, we are planting Anemone blanda, commonly known as winter windflowers. These little beauties will flower in spring and follow on from the snowdrops 💚🤍💜
1. Overnight soaking pre planting 💦
2. Counting out and setting out 2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣
3. Planting between the Birch tree 🌳 roots and snowdrops
4. Spring delights 😍
