As lime mortar curing benefits from slightly damp conditions it’s being lightly sprinkled with water to help it. It’s going to need this for the coming heatwave early morning and possibly evenings as well.

The boys took down the scaffolding this morning (it took under an hour!), and now the freshly re-pointed wall is revealed. The weather over the past 10 days was cool and damp so ideal for allowing the lime mortar to harden slowly, it will continue to cure for a little while yet and will always be a bit ‘live’. The wall can now breathe naturally and that will prevent and damp from getting trapped inside and also allow the stones to move very slightly in different temperatures.

This is the way than traditional cottage walls were built, cement mortar isn’t suitable as it’s very hard and also doesn’t allow damp to escape. The wall should be good for years now, long after I’m around!

Richard was on site yesterday and today, just a bit more to do tomorrow. The view from the top of the scaffolding is great.

Lovely architecture. The Orangery at Tyntesfield House is so gorgeous, you can see how much careful thought went into it by the designer. It would make a fabulous replacement for the rather tired Pavilion cafe in my view!

At last- some lime mortar going in! The weather is certainly not typically dry as we expect in May so Richard has had to duck and dive a bit. He’s here tomorrow as the following days are looking a bit wet.
It’s quite dark at the moment but will lighten when it’s dry, it will then slowly weather down over the next year or so . What we didn’t want was bright creamy white mortar like the third photo.

The wall is fully hacked out now, the next step is to start the new pointing with lime mortar but it will be a bit dependent on the weather because unlike sand and cement mortar,it needs time to harden. Fingers crossed for dry weather!

Richard made good progress today and managed to hack out from the second lift of the scaffolding, nearly down to the road.
He found some evidence of damp trapped behind the cement mortar. He’s hoping to point the top section tomorrow.

Day 2.

Once the old pointing started coming out, the stone mason found the top of the gable was in much poorer condition than expected. Parts around the chimney flue had opened up badly enough to expose the flue itself.

A section of stonework had to be carefully taken apart so it could be rebuilt and strengthened before the lime pointing continues.

Slow progress, but the right way to do it.
