Huge thank you to everyone who came along, and to all the growers and speakers who made it what it was.

Three fairs in three years, and it’s growing every time.

It’s grown so much over the past few years, and yesterday really felt like something special. The atmosphere throughout the day was fantastic.

🌿 Talks & demonstrations this Saturday

Alongside around 25 specialist plant growers, we’ll have a full programme of free talks and demonstrations running throughout the day at the Bristol Rare Plants & Orchid Fair.

Topics range from wildlife-friendly gardening and ethnobotany (with food samples 👀) to rare plants and creative live demos — so there’s plenty to dip into while you’re there.

There will also be an informal orchid clinic running all day, so feel free to bring a plant along if you’d like advice.

It all adds up to much more than just a plant sale — it’s a proper day out.

🌿 Spotlight: Special Plants Nursery

We’re really pleased to welcome Derry Watkins back to the Bristol Rare Plants & Orchid Fair.

A Chelsea Flower Show medallist and one of the UK’s most respected plantspeople, Derry is known for her exceptional range of rare and unusual plants — from striking architectural outdoor species to more unusual and tender plants rarely seen for sale.

What makes her stand out is that she genuinely excels at cultivating both — hardy and tender — which is a rare thing in itself.

If you’re looking for something a bit different (and properly interesting), her stand is definitely one to visit.

And if you ever get the chance to visit her nursery just east of Bristol, it’s well worth it.

Come and see her — and many other specialist growers — on the day.

🌿 It’s not just rare houseplants…

We’re really excited to have Grow Wilder joining us at the Bristol Rare Plants & Orchid Fair.

Based here in Bristol, Grow Wilder (part of Avon Wildlife Trust) grow and sell a wide range of British indigenous plants that support wildlife — including rare and unusual wildflowers that you won’t often find for sale.

So alongside exotic houseplants and specialist outdoor plants, you’ll also discover something a little different: plants that can genuinely help bring wildlife back into your garden.

It’s this mix of expert growers and inspiring local projects that makes the day feel like more than just a plant fair.

Come along and see it for yourself.

Tulipa clusiana ‘Danique’ in this evening light ☀️🌸

Most people think of the big, bold hybrid tulips when they think of tulips. But I’ve always preferred species like this one — much simpler, more delicate, and (to me) far more elegant.

They also have a big advantage: they tend to come back year after year much more reliably than most tulip hybrids.

I grow these in a warm, south-facing border with sandy loam soil. If you provide plenty of sun without heavy fertilising and excessive summer watering they will happily multiply every year.

Such a lovely plant in spring 🌷
