Poole Farm Cabin, Plymouth

Set on a hillside above Poole Farm, this fully off-grid classroom and community space sits lightly within its landscape. The raised subframe lifts the building two metres above ground, while a semi-intensive green roof will, in time, draw it back into the slope. Inside, natural light moves across roundwood beams and larch framing, connecting the space to the woodland edge.

Built for Plymouth City Council, the cabin serves as a classroom, yoga studio and meeting hall. A 5.5-metre set of bi-fold doors allows the interior to open out or divide for flexible use, complemented by a 64sqm veranda, ramped access, kitchenette and WC. Solar power, battery storage and rainwater harvesting make the building self-sufficient year-round.

Poole Farm, Plymouth
At a woodland site just north of Plymouth, we designed and built a beaver hide and woodland classroom to support wildlife observation and environmental education. Constructed on a steep, muddy slope with minimal ground disturbance, the structure is anchored on small concrete pad foundations. The timber frame supports fourteen full-height windows made from 10mm laminated safety glass, providing expansive views for large groups.

The EPDM rubber roof, with a service life exceeding 50 years, is complemented by a green roof system. Old car tyres filled with soil and rotting logs around the perimeter create a habitat for organic matter to accumulate, fostering a self-sustaining ecosystem.

Westhay Moor, Somerset Levels
At Westhay Moor on the Somerset Levels, we built a two-storey bird hide to give visitors an elevated perspective over the wetland. Perched on 8-meter-tall larch poles, it provides unobstructed views of the reedbeds and open water, perfect for spotting bitterns, marsh harriers, great white egrets, and other wetland species. The poles are wrapped in ‘Pole Saver’ sheeting and fitted with boron rods for long-lasting durability.

The upper level features expansive windows framing the landscape, accommodating large groups of visitors. Inside, the exposed timber frame showcases the craftsmanship, creating an immersive experience that connects people with the wildlife around them.

Stonelynk Organics, East Sussex
Nestled in the heart of Fairlight, East Sussex, Stonelynk Organics thrives on 4.5 acres of fertile Wealden clay. Founded by Hélène Maerschalck and Stephen Atkinson in 2018, this certified organic farm is dedicated to growing a diverse range of vegetables and fruits using sustainable practices that respect the local ecosystem. Their commitment to minimal machinery and natural processes ensures a harmonious relationship with the land.

To support their operations, we designed and built a low-impact workshop and packing space that blends seamlessly into the landscape. Constructed with a roundwood timber frame, the building features locally sourced Douglas fir and larch cladding, and incorporates sustainable materials like willow coppice timber sourced from the site. The structure includes a packing hall, mess room, compost loo, and storage solutions for produce and equipment. Its elevated position offers sweeping views of the surrounding fields, providing a tranquil vantage point to observe the thriving ecosystem and the hardworking team behind this regenerative farm.

Bucklebury Deer Park, Reading
The Bucklebury Cabin is a fully insulated, livable timber space designed for comfort and year-round use. The main interior is full-height, with a mezzanine bedroom creating additional space while maintaining an open, airy feel.

The structure is raised above potential flood levels and includes an air-source heat pump for low-carbon heating and hot water. Built to exceed current building regulations, the cabin is airtight, energy-efficient, and designed with minimal environmental impact in mind.

The 7m x 15m footprint is complemented by a 5m x 2m lean-to for services and storage, and a 2m x 15m decking area. The exterior is clad in Douglas fir, with a metal roof sheet providing durability and weather resistance.

Westhay Moor, Somerset Levels
Step onto the boardwalk at Westhay Moor, and you’re lifted above the marsh, with reedbeds stretching out below and the call of birds all around. Every timber was chosen and treated for longevity, creating a path that lets visitors walk gently through a returning ecosystem while feeling fully immersed in the wetland.

The boardwalk’s sub-frame is constructed from oak sleepers, with a walking surface of durable robinia timber fitted with anti-slip strips for safety. A low oak perimeter toe board runs around the deck to prevent accidental roll-offs. These materials were selected to provide a robust, long-lasting structure while minimizing impact on the sensitive peatland below.

RSPB Leighton Moss, Carnforth
At RSPB Leighton Moss in Cumbria, we replaced an aging bird hide with a new structure designed for both function and immersion. Built entirely by hand in a remote part of the reserve, the hide sits 30 metres out into the wetland, offering unobstructed views of marsh harriers, otters, and wading birds. Its 37 m² interior is fully insulated, while the 32 m² veranda remains open, keeping visitors close to the elements while enjoying year-round comfort inside the hide.

Raised 1.5 metres above the waterline on timber piles, the hide was constructed using custom tooling and prefabricated panels transported by hand, minimizing environmental impact and site disruption. Inside, bespoke features like projecting footboxes and variable-height counters enhance the birdwatching experience for all visitors.

Parc Y Dderwen, Pembrokeshire
On their 12-acre off-grid farm in Pembrokeshire, Lauren & Phil live and work close to the land: fermenting kimchi, teaching workshops, and growing food with care for their soil and their community.

We built this 100sqm barn to serve both sides of that work — four open bays for tractor storage and crop sorting, and two enclosed insulated kitchen bays for preparing and storing their ferments.

A rainwater collection tank and solar array on the roof make the building part of their off-grid system, while the roundwood frame keeps it anchored in craft — its poles flattened outward for practical fixing, but left round within to show their true form.

The Den, Pickwell Manor, Devon
Set on concrete pads in a coastal woodland, The Den is a treehouse retreat built with care for its surroundings. Roundwood framing, cedar cladding and deep insulation help it sit lightly in the landscape, offering comfort without excess.

A wraparound balcony brings you into the treetops, while sliding glass doors open the living space to the forest. Inside, natural materials and built-in joinery keep the atmosphere calm and warm, supported by underfloor heating and a wood-burner. Below, a private spa with hot tub, sauna and cold plunge offers quiet recovery after long walks.

Resilience Barn, Gloucestershire

Built for The Resilience Centre, this open-sided roundwood barn provides a durable, low-impact workspace at the edge of the woods. The structure uses UK-sourced timber, with minimal ground disturbance and a simple corrugated roof for long-lasting protection.

The Resilience Centre is a social enterprise focused on helping communities and organisations adapt to climate change — developing practical, sustainable solutions that build resilience from the ground up.

Long Mead Barn, Oxfordshire

Built for the Thames Valley Wildflower Meadow Restoration Project, this barn offers shelter, workspace, and a quiet vantage on the slow renewal of the hay meadow beyond.

Its dual-pitch roof pairs tradition with technology — one side steeply thatched to shed rain and age with grace, the other shallower, allowing solar panels to catch the sun. Between them, a frame of roundpole rafters holds both with quiet strength.

Recognised with an Oxford Preservation Trust Award for its contribution to sustainable design and the working landscape.

Garage Workshop, Devon

Rising from hand-laid stone, this workshop balances weight and light. Roundwood posts stand proud on staddle stones, lifting the frame clear of the earth; larch rafters trace clean lines under slate and solar. Prefabricated wall panels meet traditional joinery, and a mezzanine tucks beneath the ridge for added storage.

Large timber garage doors, fitted with an inset wicket door, give smooth access from the lane while keeping the façade warm and finely detailed.
