"A pilot for a new government-backed app has been launched, aimed at helping architects and homeowners navigate the planning system for house extensions
The RIPA app, which stands for Reducing Invalid Planning Applications, has been designed by three local councils to try and speed up and simplify the application process for projects that can use the permitted development route.
Simple home upgrades, such as kitchen extensions and loft conversions, do not usually need full planning permission but, according to housing ministers, the rules for permitted development are so complicated that people often waste time and money submitting invalid applications."
The app is currently being tested by Lambeth, Southwark and Buckinghamshire. The Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) said it hopes to roll it out across all councils by next summer.
