A Damp Wall, £7,000 and Five Years of Anxiety.

What our sensor technology revealed about a recurring damp problem, and why the data changed everything.

There is a particular kind of frustration that comes with a problem you cannot see the end of. You do everything you are told. You spend the money. You follow the advice. And then it comes back.

That is exactly where our client found themselves in 2025.

A Victorian house near the coast. A damp wall that had resisted every fix thrown at it for the better part of five years.

They had tried everything. And they were starting to wonder if the problem was them.

Five Years of Doing the Right Things

Before they came to us, this client had already gone through the standard checklist that most homeowners in older properties will recognise. They had the patio lifted and a French drain dug to redirect surface water away from the building.

They ventilated the home, not casually, but with real commitment, opening windows, running extraction, watching for signs of condensation. They kept the heating consistent, knowing that cold surfaces are a risk factor for moisture accumulation.

None of it resolved the problem....

We’re really pleased to see Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) publish Dampsmart’s first blog of 2026 as part of The Airing Room series.

This piece features Dawn Gelder, a private landlord who genuinely goes the extra mile for her tenants, using data, collaboration and early intervention to tackle damp and mould before it becomes a health issue.

It’s a powerful example of what’s possible when landlords, tenants and sector partners work together, rather than react after problems escalate.

As we start 2026, we wanted to share a bit of what’s been going on at DampSmart.

A lot of the work we do sits behind the scenes. It’s about helping people understand how their homes and buildings are actually performing, not just when something goes wrong, but before it does.

Over the past year, that’s meant building tools that turn environmental data into something people can genuinely use, creating clear education around what “good” looks like, and working with partners who care about getting the right outcome, not just a quick fix.

We’ve been really fortunate to work alongside Home Connections, TDS, Burton Build, South Gloucestershire Council, Toshiba, The Umbrella Project and Film Crew 4u CIC, all helping us move ideas into practice.

2026 is shaping up to be a big year for us. Our rent-or-buy model is launching, access is improving, and there’s more collaboration ahead that we’re excited to share soon.

Thanks to everyone who’s been part of the journey so far.
We’re looking forward to what comes next.
