This, the 8th film in our series about forests and trees, looks at improving the planting stock for forestry. Over hundreds of years, Uk foresters have taken out the straightest, knot free trees, to be used for timber. Effectively selecting for wonkiness. This means that most of the hardwood trees managed for resource in the UK (which are replanted after harvesting) are only useful for firewood. This isn’t good in country that is the second largest imported of timber in the world behind China. This film looks at the Future Trees Trust work to counteract this and breed hardwood trees which grow straighter and therefore require less maintainence. This is important for a low carbon future, as the more timber a tree produces - sustainable low carbon, low pollution building material - the less that get released back into the atmosphere.
Using timber cuts the carbon costs of construction, but where will the wood we'll need in future come from? The Future Trees Trust works to improve the UK's ...
