A customer contacted me after their door completely refused to unlock.
After getting it open safely, I found the issue straight away — the spindle port inside the gearbox had snapped, meaning the handles couldn’t engage the lock.

⭐ Lovely Last Job of the Day in Longbridge

Lovely last job of the day today over in Longbridge.

A lady called me out because her handle had become really stiff when lifting it to engage the locking mechanism. It was still locking, but she was worried it could fail at any moment — and she wasn’t wrong to trust her instincts.

Once I arrived, we removed the mechanism from the door and the issue was clear straight away: years of wear and tear with no previous servicing. Nothing broken, just tired parts that needed some attention.

So we carried out a full door service — cleaned everything down, re‑oiled all moving parts, and got it running smoothly again, just like the day it was first fitted. The customer was over the moon, especially as she’d prepared herself for the worst.

We also talked through my annual service option, and she’s now booked in for next year to help keep the door working properly for the long term.

🔧 A Tricky Front Door Repair From Last Week – But a Great Result in the End

Last week I was called out to a home where the front door wouldn’t lock at all. Once I opened up the gearbox, the problem became obvious — several internal parts had completely snapped.

It was one of those jobs with a few ups and downs. The priority was keeping the property secure, so I carried out a temporary repair, removing the failed components and getting the door lockable and safe before leaving.

The challenge? The original parts haven’t been made since the early 90s 😒

But we got there. After some digging and liaising with one of my suppliers, we sourced the closest possible match, and the replacement arrived today.

A few careful adjustments to the door and keeps, a new locking strip fitted, and everything is now working smoothly again — and most importantly, a very happy customer.

🔐 Why Cylinder Size & Correct Fitting Matter for Your Home’s Security

When it comes to securing your uPVC or composite door, the type of cylinder you choose is important — but the way it’s fitted is just as crucial. Even the best anti‑snap lock can be compromised if it isn’t installed to the correct specification.

Key Cylinder Specs to Look For
- Anti‑snap protection — Designed with a sacrificial section that breaks away safely if attacked.
- british Standard TS007 Star rating — The highest recognised standards for resisting snapping, drilling, bumping and picking.
- Correct internal/external sizing — Cylinders come in split measurements (e.g., 35/45). The right size ensures the lock sits flush with your handles.

Why Correct Fitting Is Critical
- Maximum protrusion should be no more than 5mm.
Anything beyond this gives an attacker something to grip, making even a high‑security cylinder vulnerable.
- Visible anti‑snap lines weaken protection.
If the sacrificial cut is exposed, the lock’s strongest defence becomes easier to target.
- A flush‑fitted cylinder protects the mechanism inside.
When fitted correctly, the handles shield the cylinder, making forced entry far more difficult.
- Incorrect sizing can strain the lock.
Oversized or undersized cylinders can cause sticking, key issues, or premature failure.
