We want to share tips to help you with your home renovation project - here are some Do's and Don'ts to bear in mind before you start the building side of the project.

Once you have planning permission and building regulations approval, you'll need to find reputable contractors to complete the project for you.

✅ If you can, only get quotes from builders recommended to you. Do your due diligence on each builder, including looking at reviews and talking to some of their previous clients. Some people are scared to ask builders for details of past jobs - but it's important! Get in touch with each builder and ask what their quote would be; how long the project will take; and what's their availability. It's surprising how each of these three elements can vary a great deal. You will know from talking to each builder, how they respond to questions, and what their previous clients say, whether you feel you can trust them with your dream project.

❌ Don't assume your budget will not exceed its estimate. You might have done all of the calculations on what it would take for your materials, labour and miscellaneous items - but there still needs to be a budget allowance for things that might possibly go wrong during construction. There are unpredictable situations which may come up during construction which won't surface until they happen. Uncovering hidden walls could lead to finding electrical work, structural problems or even plumbing leaks. So always add a contingency budget.
