Spot the crack 👀

This hairline crack in the secondary heat exchanger assembly was allowing water to leak out of the heat exchanger and on to parts of the boiler that it shouldn’t be touching; causing corrosion. Left untreated, this can cause the boiler to rot through, leading to a dead boiler! Fortunately we spotted this on a routine service and a temporary repair was carried out, with a new assembly to be fitted soon.

Featuring my war wound from managing to drill in to my hand whilst servicing the AGA at this property - not sure how deep, but deep enough to bleed like a water fountain 🩸😬

Called out to a job this morning - an issue with no heating and loud noises coming from the system. Identified a blocked cold feed that was preventing the system from being topped up with water. Cleared the blockage and bled the air from the system and this heating system was back in action ♨️

A chilly boiler service to this Grant Vortex, in the cold snap last week. Not the most enjoyable one but I’ll take it over the rain we’ve had this week! The ice makes driving down page hill interesting though 🚐 ❄️⛸️

You can see pictured below that the boilers baffles have been removed in order to clean them and the combustion chamber. With an oil boiler, this is something that should be carried out annually on every boiler service. It’s surprising how often a new customer says ‘I’ve never seen it taken to bits like that before‘.
All condensing boilers also have a second set of baffles located in the secondary heat exchanger, that in this case had already been removed, cleaned and returned.

Having never needed to replace a Warmflow flue seal, we’ve now found 3 of them leaking in quick succession. 2 of which had leaked condensation down the back of the boiler and caused a puddle of water on the floor - this could easily be misdiagnosed as a leaking heat exchanger which translates to a dead boiler!
If left untreated the leaking seal would cause the boiler to rot out as the flue gasses mix with condensation and make an acidic water that his highly corrosive. However if treated quickly it’s an easy fix, as was the case with this boiler, after we noticed the leaking seal during a routine service visit.
