Absolutely fantastic weekend Borders Competitions Jim Clark Rally for my nephews birthday! Loved every second of it, some really great driving, and (I think) I’ve got some fantastic photos too! My nephew also managed to meet some of his favourite drivers too, and were only too happy to speak with him and give him an autograph! Great atmosphere all around; from the marshalls, spectators and the drivers, everyone is doing their part to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone!
From a professional point of view, it’s always nice to see your name in print too - some of you may have noticed a cheeky wee advert on the centre fold of the programme!

There is something truly magical about opening a project file and finding a “time capsule” this well-preserved.
I’ve just started work on a house constructed in 1983, and I was met with these beautifully preserved hand-drawn plans and specifications. In an era of digital files and CAD, seeing this level of analog record-keeping is both a delight and a genuine surprise.
The best part? After completing my own measured survey, I found that the house was constructed exactly as drawn. There is almost zero deviation between these 40-year-old sheets and the reality on-site—a testament to the precision of the original draftsmanship and the care of the builders.
It’s a rare treat to have such a reliable foundation to build upon. Massive thank you to my new client for sharing these, it’s truly made my job that little bit easier!

This week’s new project is a bit of a time capsule—and a wake-up call.
I’ve been appointed to step into a project that began 15 years ago but never reached the finish line. As an architect wasn’t used to oversee the construction phase, the work wasn’t built according to the approved building warrant. The result? No completion certificate, a frustrated client in limbo, works that has lasted over a decade, and not being able to enjoy their home!
My task;
1. Review the original approved plans against the reality of what was built.
2. Liaise with the Local Building Control body.
3. Prepare a definitive scope of works to finally bring this home up to code and satisfy the authorities.
Why use an architect for contract administration and site oversight?
• Compliance is Key: We ensure what is on paper is exactly what gets built, meeting all safety and legal standards.
• Budget Protection: Fixing mistakes 15 years later is far more expensive than getting it right the first time.
• The Paperwork Trail: We manage the certificates and approvals so you aren’t left with a house you technically can’t “finish” or sell.
• Peace of Mind: We act as your expert eyes and ears on-site, holding contractors accountable to the design.
It’s never too late to get it right, but it’s always cheaper to start right!

Secondary Glazing
A little bit about Secondary Glazing for yesterday’s CPD. Still on the theme of sustainability. Secondary glazing is a common on retrofit projects as an alternative, more cost effective solution, to window replacement, particularly where the existing windows are single glazed or on a Listed Building.
Secondary glazing is commonly accepted by the big Heritage consultees one would normally come across in Planning - Historic England/The Georgian Group/The Victorian Society/Historic Environment Scotland to name but a few.
Improved thermal performance is the most popular reasoning for specifying Secondary Glazing systems, although they are able to be used to achieve a host of other effects such as noise reduction, improved security and protection where systems are now rated to Secure By Design standards, and can offer blast resistance (particularly common for government buildings, and adjacent buildings, according to the webinar).

Definitely not something to write off where upgrades are needed and cost is a material consideration!

Net Zero Carbon
Spend the morning in webinars about Net Zero Carbon - home extensions and construction isn’t just about adding space anymore, it’s about building for tomorrow. With tighter, and ambitious, Building Regulations on the horizon our homes need to be more than just beautiful - they need to be ready. As an architect, it’s crucial to be ahead of the curve.
This isn’t just about compliance; it’s about creating a home that’s cheaper to run, and healthier to live in using natural materials, investing in a design that looks forward and not back.

Planning Permission Granted today for this infill rear extension in Bedford today!
The house has been extended previously, to both the side and rear, and the client wished to extend this the width of the house to improve the kitchen, dining and read living spaces.
The new extension continues the design of the existing rear extension and introduces a pitched roof to tie the design back to the original house, replacing a bitumen felt flat roof.
This modest extension, combined with the internal layout changes at ground and first floor level, will allow the client to use the house as they wish and support its long-term future as a functional family home.
Considering something similar? Or curious about what’s possible with your own space? Let’s explore it.

Trialing a new sketching and render workflow today using . Still got a lot to figure out, and it’s still very far away from a finished design but really interesting to find new ways of doing things and becoming more efficient in the way that I work!
Definitely something I’m going to continue to pursue in my spare time until I’m ready/confident to use it on a live project! Just thought I’d share a snippet of me continuing to develop and refine my design process!

Great to be on site this morning on this Grade II Listed Building to review the most appropriate structural intervention for the long term conservation of the building.
This Elm beam has a significant deflection, and parts are crumbling so what we do, and we do it, must be carefully considered. A great conversation involving the client, Structural Engineer, Contractor, Heritage Consultant and the Local Authority Conservation Officer!
