Volunteering is at the centre of local community’s lives whether it be setting up local community foodbanks, clothing banks, responding to local and international disasters or helping to raise funds

for a specific need, there is a project or activity to suit everyone. By volunteering with Rotary, you know that you will be changing people’s lives for the better. Being part of Rotary is more than just giving back to the community by volunteering. It is also about you bringing your skills, experience and enthusiasm to help it thrive, whilst making some great friends along the way. Our club is a friendly place who invites speakers from a wide range of backgrounds to share their knowledge, our members also share a common interest in friendship and if you visit any of the other clubs around Great Britain and Ireland you will immediately feel the sense of camaraderie and fun. Share Skills by Volunteering for Rotary
Volunteering with Rotary could be the most important thing you ever do. Your skills and experience are invaluable in our drive to help communities at home and around the world through our volunteer work. Whether you become a member of Rotary or volunteer your time and abilities to your local club, you will be helping to make people’s lives better. Get Involved:
We work with local schools promoting wellbeing by involving the primary school children in our award winning Rotary Rambles, encouraging map reading, and other skills associated with outdoors. We are in close contact with our local schools, running annual Burns competitions, involving the children in the Rotary annual primary school quiz and running a Rotakids club within the schools. There are many ways to get involved with Rotary:
You could join us and open up a world of opportunities. You could volunteer to speak at a club about a cause or interest
If you are a school pupil, you could take part in a Rotary competition
You could volunteer to help the club in one of its initiatives, without becoming a Rotary member
If Rotary sounds like the organisation for you and you feel like volunteering some of your spare time, we’d like to hear from you! Simply visit our website at www.Burntisland.rotary1010.org and send a message to our secretary David, or join us at one of our meetings on Tuesday 6.45 pm for about 1 hour at The Sands Hotel, Burntisland. We are at present meeting by zoom and Ros our secretary will provide you with a link to the meeting. Once back at our meeting place we intend to diversify and hold face to face meetings combined with Zoom technology for those unable to attend in person.

Last Tuesday we were delighted to give a warm welcome to Anne Wilson. Anne was inducted into the Club by President Lesley and is our newest member. The members have met Anne several times as a guest and she was even brave enough to turn up one evening as our speaker. Anne is an experienced hat maker and brought along lots of samples for members to model. The men weren't to happy, but gave a sigh of relief that they weren't asked to model. Next time guys!

Rotary Clubs of Fife: Pilgrim Way Walk in aid of “Fife Young Carers”
12 Rotary Clubs in Fife will be lacing up their boots for a very special challenge, walking the entire Fife Pilgrim Way in a single day, in aid of “Fife Young Carers”.
Teams of walkers will set off across seven stages of this historic 64 mile (104km) route, which stretches between North Queensferry or Culross and the ancient city of St. Andrews. Each team will begin their stage at 9.30am, with the final group departing at 11.30am and arriving in St Andrews at 4.00pm. Members of the public are warmly invited to join in for any stage they choose
The seven stages:
Participants can choose from the following stages, each accessible by public transport at both the start and end points.
North Queensferry to Dunfermline- 8.5 miles
Culross to Dunfermline - 8.5 miles,
Dunfermline to Kelty - 8.5 miles,
Kelty to Glenrothes - 11.5 miles,
Glenrothes to Kennoway - 8.5 miles,
Kennoway to Ceres - 8.5 miles,
Ceres to St Andrews - 9.5 miles,
Why are they walking?
At the heart of this event is Fife Young Carers, an organisation that supports young people up to the age of 25 who are caring for family members living with ill-health, disability, learning disabilities or substance dependency. These remarkable young people balance education, work, and their own wellbeing alongside providing essential care at home- often at great personal cost.
As the Rotary Clubs of Fife put it simply: by walking the Pilgrim Way, their members are helping to ensure that young carers are not walking alone:
How to get involved:
Simply support the cause from home, or come and cheer them on at any of the starting points or if you see them along the way say Hi!
Those walking are being given the opportunity to explore some of Fife’s finest countryside and heritage while making a real difference to the lives of young people across the region. Whether you donate, or spread the word, your support matters.

"Walking the footsteps of Pilgrims"
The Fife Pilgrim Way follows the paths once trodden by medieval pilgrims, passing through some of the region’s most historically significant landmarks. Along the route, walkers will encounter Culross Abbey, the Friary at Inverkeithing, the ancient stone circles at Balbirnie, St Margaret’s Shrine, the iconic Forth Bridges and the magnificent St. Andrew’s Cathedral at journey’s end. It is a route rich in history, natural beauty, and a sense of shared purpose-making it a fitting backdrop for a walk in support of young people in our community.
To sponsor the walkers or donate , visit the teams Just Giving Page at www.justgiving.com/team/rotary-pilgrimwaywalk
Where donations to support either the whole team or individuals are gratefully received.

Recognition Day at Balwearie High School

The Club were delighted to be invited by Mrs. Alison Mitchell, Headteacher of Balwearie High School to celebrate the success of 14 young students who were selected to train with the Polar Academy for a trip of a lifetime to Finland.

Having trained in this country for a whole year in the roughest, coldest terrains, they went well prepared to meet the many challenges that were set. They hold the record of being the first group ever, to be sent to Finland, quite an achievement and one that can never be beaten. They continue to share their experiences within the community and further afield and encourage other school age pupils to jump at the chance if the Polar Academy comes to their area..

The Polar Academy is a charitable organisation which focuses on the ‘invisible’ pupils and gives them the opportunity to find inner strength and shine while completing physically and mentally challenging tasks. The Polar Academy’s work is fully funded through the support of charitable trusts, foundations, patrons, and corporate partners, and a range of fundraising activities and events. With the cost of sending each young person on this transformative journey amounting to approximately £25,000, community support is essential.

We also heard from Hamish Brown MBE FRSGS, a writer of hill climbing and outdoor pursuits who spoke about the figure head from the training ship Captain A. Scott mounted in the foyer of Balwearie High school. He likened the Polar Academy’s adventures to the adventures of those on the training ship.

The Rotary Club of Burntisland & Kinghorn presented Brass plaques to the school to celebrate both of these events and keep the memories of these achievements for the future pupils of the school. We look forward to the students coming back to visit the Club and talk to us about their experiences.

" Rotary Books4Home project",

Rotary Great Britain & Ireland is excited to launch Rotary Books4Home Impact Days! This project gives children the opportunity to choose a free book of their own to take home and keep, sparking their love of reading with family and friends. We know that children’s enjoyment of reading is at an all-time low since records began, according to the National Literacy Trust, and we want to make a positive impact starting at home

Our Club has taken on the challenge of providing a good quality pre-loved book for every child in Burntisland Primary and Nursery School to take home and keep. We thought we would start small to see how things worked out before going on to the next school in our community. Didn’t quite work out starting small, as the Primary school we chose to start with had over 500 pupils. Our challenge now is to collect over 500 books to accommodate all the pupils in Burntisland Primary and Nursery

The team have been collecting books from local sources that include the Big Green Market, Burntisland Library, The Toll centre, Burntisland and Burntisland Primary School. We are very grateful for their help and also the help from our speaker David McNeil.
from Scottish Literacy Association who provided us with a number of brand new books..

Containers have been left in the premises of the above to encourage people to recycle books to ensure they don’t end up in landfill.

At this present time we have around 300 books so only another 300 or so to go. Impact days are the 23rd and 24th June.
If you have any new or preloved quality books suitable for nursery age children or primary 1-7, either drop them off at any of the places named above before those dates and pop them in the container with Burntisland & Kinghorn Rotary on it, or, message me through Facebook messenger and I can arrange to pick them up. We would be grateful for your donations to help us reach our target and beyond.

The Club welcomed Alex MacDonald First Aid Services: He is the chairman of Burntisland First Aid Services Trust (BFAST), based in a former police station in Fife. Alex came along to tell us about CPR and Defibrillators and give us some hands on experience. Thankfully he brought with him 2 mannequins to practice on 1 male and 1 female. David Kelley our Senior Vice- President was the first to volunteer and show off his skills. Have to say it was very impressive and managed to bring the mannequin back to life using CPR and then the Defibrillator. Our thanks to Alex for giving up his time. The Club are fortunate to have a Defibrillator on the wall outside our meeting place , Burntisland.
