Great advice

Great advice

With night time temperatures forecast to drop, it's important to remember to avoid stepping on frosted grass.

Each blade of grass is made from millions of microscopic cells. Each cell is enclosed by a protective membrane. When the membrane is frozen it becomes brittle and is easily shattered by external pressures - like the ones created by feet walking across the lawn. Once the membrane is shattered the cell will die and the plant cannot replace it until the weather warms up in spring.

Walking on frozen lawns may not look as though it is doing any harm, but after the thaw, you'll likely see ugly brown footprints wherever anyone stepped.

If you must step onto a frozen lawn, try to use planks or boards to spread the weight. Better still, make yourself a cup of tea, cosy up indoors and wait for the frost to disperse.

Ragged edges to the tips of your grass plants is a sure sign that your mower blades are blunt. Instead of slicing cleanly through the vegetation, your mower is ripping at the leaves and causing unsightly damage. Those ragged edges not only look ugly, they take a long time to heal and could potentially encourage disease.

Sharpening or replacing your lawn mower blade will solve the problem in an instant. If you don’t know how to do it yourself, most garden centres will be able to recommend a lawn mower repair shop.

Excellent advice

Here are a few lawn care tips for the month of June.

βœ… Now is a good time to repair any worn or damaged areas with good quality grass seed. Don't forget to use a seedmix that matches the rest of your lawn and suits the conditions in your garden. Keep seeds well watered until they are well established.

βœ… Keep up with your mowing routine. Mowing little and often helps encourage a lovely thick sward.

βœ… We're all using our lawns more now that the weather is warmer, but leaving toys, paddling pools, blankets or furniture in the same spot for too long can stress your grass. Keep moving things around to avoid ugly yellow patches in the lawn.

βœ… All of the rain we've been having of late may well have washed some of the plant nutrients from your soil. Applying a suitable lawn feed will support strong healthy growth and help your lawn recover faster from wear and tear.

βœ… Ask your lawn care professional for advice on seasonal lawn treatments to help prepare your lawn for the hot dry summer ahead. NB Lawn treatments are not the same as lawn feeds, they work alongside fertilisers to really boost plant and soil health.

βœ… Keep an eye out for lawn pests and diseases and consult a UKLCA professional for help to control any outbreaks.
