🌻 Sunflower Competition Update 🌻

As every gardener knows, nature doesn’t always go to plan — and unfortunately it looks like many of this year’s sunflower seeds have failed to germinate 🌱

Out of the 5 seeds we sowed ourselves on the Open Day, only 1 has sprouted 😭

Has anyone else had any sunflower success yet? 🌻

We’re really sorry to anyone who has been disappointed, but to help keep the competition going we have planted 60 new sunflower seedlings here at Stanton Nurseries and grown them on under lights ready for collection 💛

If your sunflower seed hasn’t germinated, you’re very welcome to come and collect a replacement seedling from the nursery.

When collecting, please tell us your original entry number and label your new sunflower:

This will help us keep judging as fair as possible for everyone taking part.

To give the new seedlings plenty of growing time, we’re also moving Measure Day to Monday 31st August 📏

🌻 THE GREAT SUNFLOWER GROW IS OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY! 🌻

WOW… what an amazing Spring Open Day! 🌸❤️
We have nearly 100 growers taking part in our 2nd annual 'Grow a Giant Sunflower' Competition 🌻— that’s DOUBLE last year! 💛

Your sunflower seeds have been sown, plants named, and entry numbers handed out… now the growing begins!

🌱 What happens next?
Now you’ve got your sunflower home, it’s time to help it sprout!

Keep your pot:
🌡️ Warm
🌤️ In a bright spot (preferably inside whilst it sprouts)
💧 Watered little and often (don’t overwater, but don’t let it dry out!)
🪴 You can loosely cover the pot with a clear bag or lid to help trap warmth while it germinates.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing tips, reminders and celebrating your progress as your sunflowers grow 🌻

On Saturday 1st August (MEASURE DAY) you’ll need to:

📏 Measure your sunflower using a tape measure
📸 Take a photo showing:
• The measurement
• Your plant name
• Your entry number sticker

📲 Share your photo on our page so we can judge the winners!

🌻 Biggest Flower Head
🌻 Best In Show

Prizes include gardening gifts or vouchers 🎁

✨ That’s a wrap on our Open Day!

We’re finishing the day tired, happy… and very ready for a wine (or two) 🍷💛
And currently *buzzing* that the rain has finally arrived now the day is over — phew! ☔️😄

This event truly came from the heart. A very small team put a huge amount of time, energy and love into creating a relaxed, community-focused day. It may not have been perfect, but it was full of kindness, effort and good intentions — and we feel incredibly grateful for what it became.

A huge thank you to all of our wonderful local, independent makers and creators who joined us for the very first year of having stalls at our Open Day. You all brought something different, shared the same passion for what you do, and were an absolute dream to work with 💛
