Since Fursdon opened its doors to the public in 1979, we have displayed to visitors the stunning collection of 18th and 19th century clothes and textiles, all worn or used by members of the Fursdon family through history.
We are lucky to have these still in our collection!
It was 40 years ago that Catriona Fursdon first discovered them bundled up in an old trunk in pieces and, since then, she has become something of an expert.
What is put on display and how frequently depends on the fragility of the item, but efforts are made to rotate pieces in the collection so that visitors have access to what are often rare and beautiful examples of historic fashion.
This year, Catriona has used the V&A book ‘Silk: Fibre, Fabric and Fashion‘ as a source of inspiration for our 2026 exhibition, which can be seen as part of a house tour. She says:
“Browsing through the fascinating illustrations and photographs, I recognised designs, colours and examples of rare and precious heirlooms that we have in our own Fursdon collection, something that is sometimes easy to forget. This year, we have on display a satin weave silk cradle cover and matching mother’s jacket that would have been specially made for the birth of George Sydenham Fursdon (born in 1771) amongst other specially chosen silk textiles.”
George Sydenham Fursdon’s imposing portrait as a soldier in the 11th Light Dragoon Guards hangs in the Library at Fursdon, which was built as a celebration in 1815 after George returned safely from the Napoleonic campaigns.
