LOCKED OUT of your home or business, don’t panic!

The normal reaction to being outside of your comfort zone these days is to google “my nearest locksmith “, then choose one of the first ones that are recommended by google,

The problem with this is that google will always prioritise the national Ad Paying companies, you can identify these as they will have a blue ‘Ad’ next to their post.

These national companies will normally work out of a call centre somewhere probably hundreds of miles from you, they will promise you the world and a rapid response for a premium price,
Once they have your business they will then sub contract the work to a local locksmith and pay them a minimum percentage of what you will pay in the end,
This does not benefit anyone except for the national company, and least of all the vulnerable person who had to make the initial call in distress,

Why not:

Scroll past the paying ad’s where you will normally find that local tradesperson who would infact probably be the person attending the call out anyway and deal directly with them, we can almost guarantee that they would be significantly cheaper than a national company and in the long run the service would be a lot better experience for you.

Or, a better option would be to save a local, known, reputable locksmith’s number in your phone and label it as LOCKSMITH,
Let’s face it, who doesn’t have their phone with them 99% of the time these days,
A business card is useless pinned on a notice board or on the fridge door in a situation like this.

Now that its getting colder by the day you may notice that just overnight your doors become difficult to lock or starting to catch or rub on its frame this may mean that the door needs adjustments or as we say in the trade it may have “dropped”.

Your Upvc, composite or wooden door will do this for a few reasons…

1. Weather and/or climate changes, doors can expand and contract when the weather changes from hot to cold and vice versa, this may make the door difficult to close or it might not close at all.

2. You have glazing or glass in your door unit. Let’s face it glass is heavy, your door is heavy, its only being held by 3 (in most cases) hinges. That’s a lot of weight over the years for your hinges to carry.

3. Your door is old, it’s had a long life being opened and closed and dare I say slammed over the years. All this wear and tear will gradually affect your door and it will drop.

4. Your door just was never fitted correctly. I have seen doors that have not been fixed in place properly, missing wall anchors or just fitted using expanding foam and it’s easy to say this will affect your door’s performance.

The list can go on and on.

KEY SAFES.

These are very handy for a lot of people, but I can’t help but notice that more and more properties are having key safes fitted in very visible locations, and some even marked with apartment numbers on the outside of HMOs or blocks of flats,

Placing them in easily found locations is normally for ease of access for carers, family members, cleaners or guests at Air B&Bs / holiday lets, the list of reasons is numerous and normaly valid in the mind of the inexperienced installer which is understandable.

However, from a security standpoint a conscientious supplier and fitter should never advise or fit them in easily seen places on your property,

A visible key safe can be regarded as an advertisement of an empty property or a residence of a vulnerable / elderly person to an opportunist burglar and therefore should always be placed in a discreet location if possible, and never marked with a property identification label.

Some proper locksmithing today, customer wanted to convert the entire property to thumb turn keyless exit to conform to fire regulations,

They also wanted all locks to be key’d alike on site, which means all of the locks can be opened with the same key,

This is normally done to stop the nuisances of having to deal with a big bunch of keys for the property,

Eight locks in total so these seven needed to be re-pinned to replicate the one with the chosen key.

This is the type of skill set that separates the trained locksmith from the handyman,
