Found a sort of protective fleece (against cold, hot sun, slugs and fleece for the greenhouse that – although polyethylene rather than plant-based – is washable, should last for 5 years (or more indoors in the greenhouse) without tearing and shredding all over the place. It should also be recyclable after use, all being well.

My lean-to greenhouse was made well over two decades ago (by Andy and a couple of good friends) out of people's old greenhouses that they were taking down. It has thrown-away fridge shelves as the shelving/staging!

No Mow May begins - although there are mown areas to walk through, mown on a high setting, plus patches of longer grass. The front garden 'mini-meadow' has produced some hay for the guinea pigs from last year!

Extraordinary: just found a Violet Oil Beetle under fleece, apparently egg laying into a tray of coir compost containing newly planted tomato seeds on a heated mat on shelving in our greenhouse. I will keep an eye out for little triungulins seeking out flowers to climb and hitchhike on certain bee species later ...

Should I go back and try and find out whether it's actually a male? (apparently they have the most kinked antennae as well as being slimmer) or indeed an egg-laying female.
