Two people have asked me this week where the corten steel cladding on our house came from.

That made me smile.

Not because I bought something expensive or fashionable, but because I actually designed and detailed this facade system myself.

Back then, corten wasn’t appearing on every other self-build project. Most people thought I was slightly mad.

Fast forward a few years and it has weathered beautifully. The colour has deepened, the texture has developed, and it still stops people in their tracks.

Sometimes the materials that age the best are the ones that tell a story.

Have a good and creative day…

Post site visit doodles to capture my initial vision for these two new barn buildings for a potential client.

I often find a visual capture is more useful than written notes.

How do other designers out there transition from initial thoughts (normally lots of them!), into a concept they can advance for first presentation to a client?

These are very rough loose form style but enough to steer my thinking in the right direction.

Why do I still draw by hand?

Because design doesn’t happen behind a screen.

It happens on site.
In conversations.
Walking the ground.
Holding ideas up against reality.

Every house starts as a sketch.

These drawings get marked up, discussed, challenged and refined long before a single foundation is dug.

For me, design has always been something you can hold in your hands.

Have a good and creative day.

➡️➡️➡️👀What’s in the tube?👀

A few sheets of paper…..✏️

A handful of hand-drawn ideas.🖼️

Nothing particularly special at first glance.

Yet the contents of this tube have evolved into a property that is now preparing to come to market for around £8 million!

It’s a reminder that every project starts somewhere.

Not with drone footage.

Not with glossy brochures.

Not with finished photographs.

Just an idea, a pencil, and a blank sheet of paper.

More reveal on this incredible home to follow very soon!!

Have a good and creative day

The dream realised.

One of the greatest privileges of what we do is helping clients turn an idea into a place they will call home.

Steve and Susanne’s journey began with a vision and an empty plot of land. Through planning, design, craftsmanship and a lot of commitment, that vision has become reality.

This weekend we open the doors and invite visitors to experience the finished home for themselves.

Every beam, every detail and every space tells part of the story.

A reminder that the best projects are never just about buildings.

They’re about people.

Have a good and creative day.

“That will never get planning.”

We heard plenty of reasons why this project wouldn’t happen.

This weekend, people will be walking through the finished house.

Ahead of the Oakwrights Essex Open House this Friday and Saturday, here’s the story of a self-build that succeeded against the odds.

Sometimes the difference between impossible and completed is simply refusing to give up

Have a good and creative day and hopefully see some of you there..

Three new barn homes.

One rural plot.

A blank sheet of paper and a lot of possibilities.

Before the planning drawings, before the reports and before the decisions, it always starts here.

Looking at the site.
Understanding the landscape.
Working out what belongs.

These early sketches are where ideas are tested, challenged and refined before they become real places for people to live.

The best designs rarely appear fully formed.

They evolve.

After another crazy week at PJT HQ, I’m sitting in my favourite spot at home with a cold beer, staring at a blue sky and temperatures pushing into the 30s this weekend.

Moments like this remind me why I do what I do.

Designing spaces that genuinely improve the way people live has always been the goal, and being able to sit back and enjoy a vision that once only existed as sketches on paper never really gets old.

Grateful for the projects, the clients, the pressure, the chaos… and the process.

Have a good and creative (and excellent weekend) 🌞🕶️🍻🍸…

What are you doing?

Lots of buildings being born at the moment and once again, we seem to be in the middle of a ‘barn rush’…! No bad thing as I love a barn….

Have a good and creative day
